Call or Text (352) 722-5295Factory-style filters on the 2004.5-2007 RAM 5.9L Cummins
The 2004.5-2007 trucks use a sealed plastic airbox at the passenger fender, a panel filter and a plastic intake tube that feeds the Holset HE351CW turbo. For the 2004.5 '600' version of the 5.9L Cummins, Dodge grew the airbox inlet from about 19 to 26 square inches and added a vertical baffle that picks up cooler air at the front of the wheel-well liner. The factory element is Mopar 53032700AB. Chrysler later released an upgraded element, Mopar 53034249AA, under TSB 14-002-10 for trucks that work in dusty conditions. It is similar in design to the 6.7L filter.
Why the stock box holds up
A 2006 Diesel Power magazine test put six aftermarket intakes on a stock 2005, and none made more horsepower than the factory system. On the dyno, filter media alone moved peak power only about 3 hp at stock fueling. In the same testing, the stock paper element made more low-end torque below 2,000 rpm than oiled gauze, at a cost of 2-3 hp above 2,700 rpm. And because the ECM and wastegate limit boost to 30-31 psi on 2004.5 and newer trucks, no filter or intake raises peak boost on its own.
What we carry
This collection carries the Mahle LX2947 air filter, listed for 2003-2007 5.9L Cummins trucks. It is meant for owners who want to keep the factory airbox and simply replace the element. Before you install it, compare it against your old filter and check the cross-references on the product page. If you run an aftermarket intake kit instead, you need the replacement element made for that kit, not a factory-style filter.
Fitment notes
The Mahle listing covers 2003-2007, which takes in this whole platform. Airboxes, inlet ducting and intake tubes changed at 2004.5, so if your truck has had its intake swapped, look at what is actually under the hood before you order. These trucks were badged Dodge Ram, and our catalog lists them under RAM. A 2007 can be a 5.9L or the 6.7L used on trucks built after January 1, 2007, so confirm the engine, not just the year. Verify by VIN when in doubt.
Frequently asked questions
Should I run the Mopar heavy-duty filter instead?
Chrysler released Mopar 53034249AA under TSB 14-002-10 as an upgraded 2003-2007 5.9L element for dusty conditions. It is worth knowing about if your truck lives on dirt roads or job sites. For highway driving, a factory-style element in the sealed stock box is the setup the testing favored at stock power.
Will a factory-style filter cost me power?
Not at stock fueling. Testing on this engine found the sealed stock box with the Mopar filter was as good as any aftermarket intake. The gains from a full aftermarket intake showed up only with added fuel, and even then landed in the 5-10 hp range.
