Exhaust accessories for the 2004.5-2007 RAM 5.9L Cummins

From 2004.5 on, this Cummins left the factory with a 4-inch exhaust and a catalytic converter behind the Holset HE351CW turbo. Earlier 2003 and early 2004 trucks ran a 3.5-inch downpipe with no converter. The parts in this section work around that 4-inch system: a brake at the turbo or in the pipe, a clamp at a joint, a tip at the tailpipe. Exhaust brakes: matching the year

An exhaust brake adds engine braking for towing and keeps the service brakes cooler. BD Diesel covers this truck two ways. The remote-mount 4-inch brakes install away from the turbo and come in a 2003-2005 version (BD 1027338) and a 2006-2007 version (BD 1027330). For BD's turbo-mount brakes, the air kits are split the same way: 2023331 for 2004.5-2005 and 2023330 for 2006-2007. You'll also find BD's 1030900 manual transmission lever switch, listed for 1989-2007 Cummins trucks, and the BD 1405926 exhaust V-band clamp. A 2004.5 truck is a 2004 model year, so it takes the earlier part.

The factory exhaust on a 2004.5-2007 is 4-inch, and most of the MBRP tips here have a 4-inch inlet with outlets from 4 to 8 inches, in straight cut, angle cut, rolled edge, single wall, dual wall, turndown and a black hex finish. Fitment notes

Read the year range on every brake part, because BD changes parts at 2006. On 2007 trucks, confirm the engine first: the 5.9L and the 6.7L were both sold as 2007 models, and exhaust parts follow the engine, not the year. If your truck already has an aftermarket cat-back, measure the tailpipe before picking a tip. When in doubt, verify by VIN.

Which exhaust brake fits my 2004.5-2007 5.9L?

It comes down to model year. BD's remote-mount 4-inch brake is 1027338 for 2003-2005 trucks and 1027330 for 2006-2007. A 2004.5 truck is a 2004 model year, so it falls in the earlier group. On a 2007, make sure the truck has the 5.9L before ordering.
