2004.5-2007 Dodge 5.9L Cummins Short & Long Blocks

Short blocks, long blocks and Ready Run crate engines from D&J Precision Machine for 2004.5-2007 Ram 2500 and 3500 trucks with the 5.9L Cummins. Before you order, pin down your year. The Ready Run engines are split between 2004.5-2005 and 2006-2007, and any remanufactured long block should match this engine's 17.2:1 compression ratio.

Short and long blocks for the 2004.5-2007 RAM 5.9L Cummins

The 2004.5-2007 engine is the 325-hp common-rail 5.9L: a cast-iron parent-bore inline-six with a 4.02 in bore, 4.72 in stroke, solid-lifter cam and 17.2:1 compression. Its block is the stiffened common-rail design, with sculpted side walls, stiffening rails and a plate across the oil-pan rail to handle higher cylinder pressure. The front gear case is located by dowel tubes, so there is no killer dowel pin to worry about, and the 1999-2001 53-block cracking issue does not apply. The engine's reputation is that the fuel system and bolt-ons give out long before the iron does.

What fails and why

Look for the cause before you install a replacement engine. A failed injector that is driven on can wash a cylinder or dilute the oil, with white smoke, a dead miss and a rising oil level as the warning signs. On trucks with added fuel and the stock turbo, repeated high exhaust gas temperatures can drop a valve seat and put metal in the cylinder. If the injector or the fueling that caused the damage is still in place, a new block will face the same problem. Fix the root cause, then swap the engine.

Stock replacement vs. upgrade

A short block is the bare block with the rotating assembly, for when you plan to reuse your own head and top-end parts. A long block adds the cylinder head and valvetrain. A Ready Run crate engine is D&J's more complete package; check the product page for exactly what comes with it. D&J offers its Precision Plus and Essential lines in these formats, so compare the build details on each product page against your plans. Remanufactured long-block components are the OEM-grade route for a stock truck. If you are building power, plan the head clamp now: head studs and an upgraded head gasket are recommended above about 40 psi of boost.

What we carry

The engines here come from D&J Precision Machine. Ready Run crate engines: the Precision Plus 5.9 DJPLB100092 for 2004.5-2005 and DJPLB100097 for 2006-2007. Long blocks: the Precision Plus 5.9 DJPLB100014 and the Essential 5.9 DJPLB100076, both listed for 2004.5-2007. Short blocks: the Precision Plus 5.9 DJPSB100005 and the Essential 5.9 DJPSB100020, both listed for 2004.5-2007. Gaskets, seals, heads and the rest of the engine are in our other Cummins parts collections.

Fitment notes

The 2004.5-2005 and 2006-2007 engines differ on top. Early engines use a separate breather assembly on the rocker housing with three pass-through injector connectors. The 2006-2007 engines use a one-piece molded plastic valve cover with an integral breather and a single multi-wire injector connector, and the injector harness changed with it. The Ready Run engines are listed in two year ranges, so order the one that matches your truck. On 2007 trucks, confirm the engine is the 5.9L; the 6.7L replaced it partway through the model year and is a different engine. Verify by VIN, and call the shop before ordering an engine.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a short block, a long block or a crate engine?

It depends on what is still good. If your head and top end are healthy and you want to reuse them, a short block is the starting point. If the head is damaged too, a long block replaces both. A Ready Run crate engine is the most complete package; check the product page for exactly what comes with it.

Is the 2004.5-2007 5.9L block known for cracking?

No. The 53-block cracking issue affected 1999-2001 24-valve blocks cast by TUPY and is not a 2003-2007 concern. The common-rail block was also stiffened for higher cylinder pressure, and its dowel-tube gear case means no killer dowel pin.

Will a 2006-2007 Ready Run engine fit my 2005 Ram?

Order the one listed for your year. D&J lists the DJPLB100092 for 2004.5-2005 and the DJPLB100097 for 2006-2007. Early engines use three pass-through injector connectors and a separate breather, while late engines use a single multi-wire connector and a one-piece cover with the breather built in.
