2004.5-2007 Dodge 5.9L Cummins Cooling System Parts

Water pumps, thermostats, radiators, hoses, tanks, sensors and coolant for the 2004.5-2007 Dodge Ram 2500 and 3500 with the 5.9L Cummins. The one thing to get right on this engine is coolant chemistry. These trucks were built around Mopar HOAT, and topping off with a different type shortens the life of the whole fill and can wear out the water pump seal.

Cooling system on the 2004.5-2007 RAM 5.9L Cummins

The 5.9L Cummins keeps its cooling layout simple. A belt-driven water pump moves coolant, a large engine-driven fan on a viscous clutch pulls air, and a crossflow radiator sits at the back of a stack behind the air-to-air intercooler and the A/C condenser, with a pressurized overflow bottle closing the loop. The serpentine belt that spins the water pump is driven off the harmonic damper pulley, so the damper belongs in any cooling diagnosis. The system holds about 7.3 gallons (29.5 quarts), and a normal drain-and-fill takes about 6.5 gallons. From the factory, 2003-2008 trucks were filled with Mopar 5-year/100,000-mile HOAT to spec MS-9769, pink to orange in color, although some 2003-2005 trucks shipped with green IAT coolant instead. One thing you do not have to worry about: the B5.9 is a parent-bore block with no wet sleeves, so liner cavitation and SCA treatment are not a concern the way they are on Power Stroke engines.

What fails and why

  • Viscous fan clutch. It fails by losing its silicone fluid, overheating the shear plates, or seizing. A clutch that lost fluid spins freely by hand, and the truck runs hot towing or in traffic. A seized clutch roars constantly, costs fuel economy and is hard to turn by hand. The check: engine off, the fan should have light-to-moderate resistance. None means fluid loss; absolute resistance means seized.
  • Mixed coolant. Topping off HOAT with green IAT drags the change interval down to the shorter-life coolant, about two years instead of five, and can drop silicates that abrade the water pump seal. Look for gummy deposits, a restricted heater core and a weeping pump.
  • Harmonic damper. A failing rubber damper throws off the alignment of the serpentine belt that turns the water pump.

For perspective, owner complaint data for the 2006 Ram 2500 and 3500 as a whole, gas and diesel trucks together, is dominated by HVAC blend-door and A/C complaints rather than engine cooling.

Stock replacement vs. upgrade

On most trucks the cooling system is a maintenance job. Flush at 100,000 miles or five years, mix 50/50 with distilled water, and inspect the water pump every 15,000 miles. If you find green coolant, Mopar MS-9769 HOAT is backward-compatible, so drain it and refill with HOAT rather than mixing. OEM-grade parts such as a Genuine Cummins water pump or thermostat, a CSF OEM-style radiator, or Dorman housings and heater hoses put the truck back the way it left the factory. Upgrades earn their keep on trucks that work hard: an aluminum performance radiator, a silicone hose kit, or a bundle that adds an upgraded intercooler. A better intercooler lowers intake temperatures, worth up to roughly 200 F lower EGT, and that cuts the total heat the cooling system has to shed under load.

What we carry

  • Water pumps: Genuine Cummins 5473238, Dayco, Alliant Power and the XDP XTRA Cool pump, plus XDP water pump bolt kits and a MAHLE water pump seal.
  • Thermostats and housings: Genuine Cummins 180- and 190-degree thermostats, Mishimoto high- and low-temperature thermostats, Dorman and WCFab thermostat housings, MAHLE gaskets and XDP housing bolt kits.
  • Radiators and coolers: Mishimoto aluminum performance and replacement radiators, Mishimoto radiator, transmission cooler and intercooler bundles, the XDP Xtra Cool direct-fit radiator, and a CSF radiator and A/C condenser.
  • Hoses and pipes: Dayco upper and lower radiator hoses and molded heater hoses, Mishimoto silicone and replacement hose kits, Dorman heater hose assemblies and heater core tubes, the S&B heater core supply hose, Fleece Performance Engineering heater hose kits and coolant bypass parts, and the WCFab upper coolant pipe.
  • Tanks, caps and sensors: the Dorman coolant recovery tank, the WCFab coolant tank kit and billet cap, and XDP and Alliant Power temperature sensors.
  • Coolant: Mishimoto Liquid Chill coolants and Hot Shot's Secret extended-life coolants.

Fitment notes

Read the year range in every title, because heater-side parts split partway through this run. The Dorman 626-321 heater core tube is listed for 2003-2005, the 626-574 center heater hose for 2006-2007, and the Dayco 80401 inlet hose for 2000-2005. The Mishimoto MMB-RAM-002 bundle is listed for 5.9L trucks only. Coolant spec changes by era too: 1998.5-2002 trucks call for low-silicate green, while 2003-2008 trucks call for HOAT MS-9769, so don't carry the second-gen spec over. The 2007 model year includes both 5.9L and 6.7L trucks, and the 6.7L viscous damper is not a direct bolt-on to the 5.9L, so verify front-of-engine parts by engine, not model year. When in doubt, verify by VIN.

Frequently asked questions

What coolant does a 2004.5-2007 5.9L Cummins take?

The factory spec for 2003-2008 trucks is Mopar 5-year/100,000-mile HOAT, MS-9769, mixed 50/50 with distilled water. The system holds about 7.3 gallons. Some 2003-2005 trucks shipped with green IAT, so check what is in yours before you top off.

Do I need SCA or a cavitation additive?

No. The 5.9L is a parent-bore block without wet sleeves, so liner cavitation is not a concern and SCA treatment is not required. Put that effort into keeping one coolant chemistry in the truck instead.

How do I tell if my fan clutch is bad?

With the engine off, spin the fan by hand. Light-to-moderate resistance is normal, free spinning means the clutch lost fluid, and a fan you can barely turn is seized. A truck that runs hot while the fan never roars points to a slipping clutch.

How often should the water pump be checked?

The maintenance schedule for this engine puts a water pump inspection at every 15,000 miles and a coolant flush at 100,000 miles or five years. Look for weeping at the pump, since mixed coolant can drop silicates that wear the shaft seal.

Is a performance radiator worth it?

If the truck is stock and the old radiator simply wore out, an OEM-style replacement does the job. If it tows heavy or carries more power, an aluminum radiator or a bundle with an upgraded intercooler makes sense, since lower intake temperatures cut the heat the cooling system has to reject under load.
