Call or Text (352) 722-5295The steering box on the 2003-2004 Ram 5.9L Cummins
These trucks use a recirculating-ball steering box mounted to the frame. The box's sector shaft turns the pitman arm, which drives the factory Y-style linkage across the solid front axle. Every steering input you make, and every kick the tires send back, passes through that box and its frame mount, and the mount is where the trouble tends to start.
What goes wrong
Under load the sector shaft can deflect at the frame mount. It shows up as a vague on-center feel, or a wobble that stays even when everything else in the front end checks tight. It tends to show up at high mileage and on trucks running larger tires. Because the track bar, ball joints and tie-rod ends can all produce similar wander and play, Thuren's diagnosis order checks those first and the box last.
Brace or new box
If the box is sound but the mount flexes, a brace is the fix. A steering-box brace supports the sector shaft so it stops deflecting, and it replaces or supplements the factory mount. Braces are widely cataloged for 2003-2004 trucks. If the box itself is worn out, replace it. The XDP XD750 Stock+ is a new power steering gearbox, listed for 2003-2008 5.9L and 6.7L Cummins trucks with 4WD. If you are putting a new box in a high-mileage truck, look at the brace at the same time so the new box stays put on the frame.
What we carry
- XDP XD750 Stock+ power steering gearbox, new, listed for 2003-2008 5.9L/6.7L Cummins with 4WD.
- BD Diesel 1032003 steering box stabilizer, a frame brace for the box, listed for 2003-2018 Cummins trucks.
Fitment notes
The XD750 is listed for 4WD trucks only, so 2WD owners should confirm before ordering. The BD brace covers a wide range of Cummins years, including 2003-2004. After installing a box, reset toe to 0.00-0.05 degrees total, check caster and center the steering wheel. Refill the power steering system and bleed it per the box maker's instructions. Verify by VIN or call us.
Frequently asked questions
How do I know if the steering box is the problem on my 2003-2004 Ram?
Rule out the rest first. Thuren checks the track bar, ball joints and tie-rod ends before looking at box play. If all of those are tight and the truck still feels vague on center or wobbles, sector-shaft deflection at the frame mount is the next suspect, especially on high-mileage trucks with bigger tires.
Is a steering box stabilizer the same as a steering stabilizer?
No. A steering stabilizer is a damper on the linkage that controls shake. A steering box stabilizer, like the BD Diesel 1032003, is a brace that supports the box and sector shaft at the frame so the box cannot flex. They solve different problems, and upgrade plans for these trucks often include both.
Do I need an alignment after replacing the steering box?
Yes. Reset toe to 0.00-0.05 degrees total and check caster after any box or linkage work. Thuren's caster range for these trucks is 3.2 to 4.8 degrees depending on year and model.
