1998.5-2002 Dodge 5.9L Cummins Injection Pumps

Bosch VP44 injection pumps and lift-pump parts for the 1998.5-2002 Dodge Ram 2500 and 3500 with the 24-valve 5.9L Cummins. The VP44 is the injection pump on every one of these trucks, and it lives or dies on supply pressure from the lift pump. Before you replace one, prove the lift pump is doing its job.

The VP44 on the 1998.5-2002 RAM 5.9L Cummins

The VP44 is an electronically controlled rotary distributor pump. Inside, a timing solenoid moves the timing piston, and the fuel solenoid works as both fill valve and pressure relief. The ECM runs the pump open loop while cranking, on 12 volts and ground alone, then switches to closed loop with the lift pump energized and the sensors monitored once the engine idles. An electronic control module, the PSG, bolts to the top. The pump is cooled and lubricated by its supply fuel, so it needs at least 5-6 psi from the lift pump. The 2003 5.9L moved to common rail, so these pumps belong to this generation only.

What fails and why

Three patterns show up. First, starvation: when the lift pump fails, the VP44 overheats, seizes the rotor or scuffs the distributor, and you get P0216, hard hot starts, stalling on the road and no fuel at the injectors. Rotor seizures are common on 1998-1999 trucks. Second, the module: lead-free solder joints on the PSG circuit board go crystalline with age and heat cycles, and one well-known VP44 rebuilder blames it for about 90 percent of dead-pedal complaints. Codes P0251, P0253, P1688 and P1689 point that way. Third, starting trouble: a long crank cold can be a cracked diaphragm inside the pump, while a long crank only when hot points to a worn distributor, a slow starter or late fuel-relay voltage. If cold water on the pump gets a hot truck to start right away, suspect the distributor. And a stored P0216 with no drivability complaint usually means the pump can't reach full advance, so check lift-pump volume, not just pressure, before condemning the pump.

Stock replacement vs. upgrade

Replacement VP44s are sold in stock ratings and as performance units. A stock-rating reman is the right call for a truck that's staying stock. A performance pump only makes sense matched to the injectors and a defined power goal. Either way, fix the supply first. On this platform, conversion usually means moving the lift pump off the block to the frame or tank with a relocation or pusher kit, not changing the injection type, and a frame-mounted pusher is the standard upgrade over the factory block-mounted pump. Add a fuel pressure gauge while you're at it; a failed lift pump takes the VP44 with it.

What we carry

XDP remanufactured VP44 injection pumps at stock horsepower: the XDIPVR15X, listed for 1998.5-2002, and the XDIPVR17X, listed for 2000-2002 trucks with the six-speed. An Alliant Power AP4943048 fuel transfer pump kit to replace the factory lift pump. A BD Diesel VP44 Stealth Pump Cover. For frame-mounted systems from FASS and AirDog, browse lift pumps.

Fitment notes

VP44 pumps are application-specific by engine rating and transmission. The 1998.5-2000 automatic trucks were rated 215 hp. The 1998.5-2000 manual trucks and the 2001-2002 standard-output trucks were rated 235 hp. The 2001-2002 High Output, sold only with the NV5600 six-speed, was rated 245 hp. Read each listing's years and transmission, and verify by VIN before you order. To pull codes, 2000-2002 trucks show them on the odometer when you cycle the key on three times in five seconds; 1998.5-1999 trucks need an OBD-II scan tool. More for this engine at the Cummins hub.

Frequently asked questions

Is it my VP44 or my lift pump?

Start with a fuel pressure gauge after the filter. If it can't hold at least 5 psi under heavy load, the lift pump needs replacing, and the VP44 may already have suffered. If pressure is good and you have dead pedal or codes P0251, P0253, P1688 or P1689, the pump's electronics are the likely cause.

What does P0216 mean on a 24-valve?

It's an injection pump timing failure, and it usually means the pump can't reach full advance. It often sets before there's any drivability complaint. Check lift-pump volume as well as pressure before you condemn the VP44.

Which VP44 fits my truck?

It depends on engine rating and transmission. Automatic, standard-output and High Output trucks use different pumps, and the XDP pumps here are listed by year and transmission. Verify by VIN, or call us with it.

What does conversion mean on this truck?

Usually it means moving the lift pump off the block to the frame or tank with a relocation or pusher kit. It doesn't mean changing the injection type. The pump ends up pushing fuel to the VP44 instead of pulling it from the tank.
