Call or Text (352) 722-5295Exhaust accessories on the 1998.5-2002 RAM 5.9L Cummins
On a 24-valve 5.9L Cummins Dodge Ram, the accessory that matters most is the exhaust brake, along with the lock-up controller an automatic needs to run one. A turbo-mount brake takes the place of the cast elbow on the turbine outlet. When it closes, backpressure works against the engine to slow the truck, which spares your service brakes on long descents with a trailer behind you. Everything else in this group is finishing work: tips, a V-band clamp and heat wrap.
What to get right
Brake installs on this truck go wrong in two predictable ways. The first is an automatic with a brake and no controller. The 47RE's factory calibration does not hold converter lock-up on deceleration, so the controller is part of the job; manual trucks skip it. The second is a turbo-mount brake ordered for a truck that no longer has a stock-style turbo outlet. A turbo-mount brake needs the stock turbo or an aftermarket turbo with a stock-style discharge, and with an HX40-style downpipe you need an inline brake. If you tow, also think about where your pyrometer probe sits. It belongs in the manifold or turbo inlet, because downpipe readings always read low, and sustained running above 1,200-1,250 F pre-turbo puts the pistons and turbo at risk.
Choosing a brake and tips
If your turbo and cast elbow are stock, BD's turbo-mount brake is the direct route. If the downpipe has changed to an HX40-style setup, look at BD's remote-mount 4-inch brake instead. For tips, start with the inlet size that matches your tailpipe, then pick the outlet size, the cut and single or dual wall. A tip is a looks choice, so take your time on the style and finish.
What we carry
BD Diesel covers the braking side: the 1037136 remote-mount 4-inch exhaust brake and the 2033137 turbo-mount brake, both listed for 1998.5-2002 Cummins, the 1030398 Torqloc torque converter control system for 1994-2004 Cummins, the 1030900 manual trans lever switch, and a V-band clamp. MBRP supplies most of the tips, all with 4-inch inlets and outlets from 4 to 8 inches, in rolled-edge, angle-cut, straight-cut, turndown and black hex styles, single wall and dual wall. PPE adds 3-inch and 4-inch stainless tips, and Mishimoto offers a polished 6-inch angled rolled-edge tip and an exhaust heat wrap set. The main exhaust section carries more.
Fitment notes
The two BD brakes are listed for 1998.5-2002 Cummins only, which matches the 24-valve years covered here. The lever switch and the Torqloc list wider year ranges, so check each product page against your year and transmission. Match a tip's inlet to your tailpipe diameter before you look at anything else. When in doubt, verify by VIN or give us a call.
Frequently asked questions
Does a manual-transmission Ram need a lock-up controller for an exhaust brake?
No. The controller is for 47RE automatics, whose factory calibration does not hold converter lock-up on deceleration. Manual trucks run the brake without one, and the BD lever switch in this group is the manual-transmission part.
I changed turbos. Will a turbo-mount brake still fit?
Only if the new turbo has a stock-style discharge. If you run an HX40-style downpipe, go with an inline brake such as BD's remote-mount 4-inch unit.
Where does a pyrometer probe go on the 24-valve?
In the manifold or turbo inlet, ahead of the turbo. A downpipe probe always reads low. Watch the pre-turbo number when towing, since sustained running above 1,200-1,250 F puts the pistons and turbo at risk.
