1998.5-2002 Dodge 5.9L Cummins Charging & Starting Parts

This page covers alternators, starters, battery cables and starting hardware for the 1998.5-2002 Ram 2500 and 3500 with the 24-valve 5.9L Cummins. The one thing to know: on this truck the charging system touches everything. A noisy alternator or a tired battery can make the 47RE automatic hunt and the pedal go dead, so check the electrical side before you blame the VP44.

Charging and starting on the 1998.5-2002 Ram 5.9L Cummins

The second-gen Dodge Ram 2500 and 3500 with the 24-valve 5.9L Cummins runs two 12-volt batteries, a belt-driven alternator and a Denso starter. There are no glow plugs. An electric grid heater between the air horn and the intake manifold handles cold starts, switched by two relays. A healthy starter draws roughly 450 to 700 amps at operating temperature, and battery voltage should never drop below 10 volts while cranking. If your truck misses that mark, repair the starting system before you go chasing the injection pump.

The 24-valve also has a drive-by-wire throttle. The accelerator pedal position sensor (APPS) wiring and the VP44 wiring share a loom with the alternator charge wire, and the APPS signal feeds the torque converter lock-up decisions on the 47RE. That shared routing is why electrical problems on this engine so often show up as drivability problems.

What fails and why

Starter solenoid contacts are the classic high-mileage failure. The contacts pit, and you get a click with no crank, or a starter that stays engaged after the engine fires. A slow starter causes a different headache: hot hard starts that mimic a worn VP44. A long hot crank can also come from delayed fuel-relay voltage, where the lift pump does not get power on time at key-on or during cranking. That one points to the ECM or firewall connector #125, not the pump.

On the charging side, an aging alternator puts out AC ripple as its slip rings and brushes wear. That noise rides the shared loom onto the APPS signal, and the result is converter lock/unlock hunting at steady speed, surging and intermittent dead pedal. A weak battery or poor grounds can do the same thing. The side-mounted ECM is another age-related weak spot: moisture and corrosion, heat and vibration, and voltage spikes from careless jump-starts can take it out, with no-start, stalling and a P0606 code as the signs. If you run trailer clearance lights off the parking-lamp circuit, you can also overload the headlight switch; a relay cures it.

Know the codes. P0562 and P0563 mean charging voltage is low, P1594 means it is high, P0622 points to alternator field switching, P1492 and P1493 are the battery temperature sensor, P0380 and P0382 are the intake heater relays, and P1388 and P1389 are the ASD relay. On 2000-2002 trucks you can read codes on the odometer with three key cycles; 1998.5-1999 trucks need an OBD-II scan tool.

Stock replacement vs. upgrade

If only the starter solenoid is worn, the contacts can be rebuilt, or you can go back to a new OEM Denso starter. A heavy-duty gear reduction starter is the other route, and that is what this collection carries. For charging, a stock-output alternator is fine on a stock truck. A high-output alternator makes sense when you have added lights, a winch or other electrical load, and XDP makes a high-output alternator cable for that setup. Whichever way you go, replace both batteries together. A single failing battery has caused overdrive hunting on these trucks, and a new alternator will not fix that.

What we carry

From XDP: the XD257 HD gear reduction starter in wrinkle black, the XD535 starter bolt kit in black phosphate, the XD439 HD replacement battery cable set, the XD421 HD alternator cable and XD422 HD high-output alternator cable, and the XD510 and XD511 HD high-output alternators. Mean Green adds its 7548 gear reduction starter and 1339 high-output alternator. Lucas Oil Sure Start starting fluid is here too. This engine already has an intake grid heater for cold starts, so read every warning on the can before using any starting aid, and treat a truck that needs one as a problem to find.

Fitment notes

1998 was a split year. Early 1998 trucks have the 12-valve; the 24-valve arrived mid-year, which is why this page says 1998.5. Product year ranges follow that split. The XDP XD510 alternator is listed for 1990-1998.5, while the XD511 and the Mean Green 1339 are listed for 1999-2002, so a 1998.5 owner should confirm by VIN which one fits. We do not quote factory alternator amperage or battery group size for these years from memory; verify them against your VIN. The XD439 battery cables are listed for 1998.5-2002 only, while the alternator cables cover 1994-2018 5.9L and 6.7L Cummins and the starter bolt kit covers 1994-2007.

Frequently asked questions

Why does my 47RE lock and unlock at steady speed?

On a 24-valve the usual cause is electrical noise on the APPS signal. An aging alternator, a weak battery or poor grounds puts ripple on the loom, and the transmission reads it as pedal movement. The 10-gauge ground from the passenger battery negative to the back of the alternator and the alternator charge wire are the two known noise paths. Shielding or rerouting them and adding redundant block and chassis grounds are documented fixes.

My truck clicks but will not crank. Is it the starter?

Often it is the starter solenoid contacts, which pit with mileage. Before you buy parts, check that battery voltage holds above 10 volts while cranking. If the batteries and cables pass, the starter is the next stop.

Can a bad starter make my VP44 look like it is failing?

Yes. A slow starter causes hot hard-start complaints that mimic VP44 wear. Rule out the starter, the batteries and the fuel-relay voltage before you spend money on the injection pump.

Should I replace both batteries at once?

Yes. The two batteries work as a pair, and a single failing battery has been known to cause overdrive hunting on these trucks. Replacing both keeps them matched and takes one variable out of drivability troubleshooting. Verify group size by VIN before you order.

Is it safe to jump-start a 24-valve Cummins?

Avoid it except in an emergency. Improper jump-starting can spike the ECM, and a damaged ECM brings no-start and stalling problems of its own. If the truck needs jumps often, fix the batteries, cables or charging system instead.
