1994-1998 Dodge 5.9L Cummins Fuel Injectors

Injectors and injector sets for the 1994-1998 Dodge Ram 2500 and 3500 with the 12-valve 5.9L Cummins. These are mechanical pop-off injectors, one per cylinder, fed by the P7100. Getting the match right is the whole job: injectors have to suit the pump build, and some stock replacements are listed by transmission as well as year.

Injectors on the 1994-1998 Dodge Ram 5.9L Cummins

Each cylinder on the 12-valve Cummins has a mechanical pop-off injector fed by its own steel line from the Bosch P7100. There are no injector electronics. Opening pressure is higher than on the 1989-1993 VE-pump injectors. Aftermarket injectors are described by hole count and hole size, such as 5x.014, 5x18, 5x20 or 6x13, with pop pressure set to match the pump.

Check supply before you blame injectors

Low power or hard starting on a 12-valve is often a fuel supply problem. A worn mechanical lift pump, a weak overflow valve or a clogged pre-strainer in the fuel heater all cost power and drivability. Put a gauge on the 1/8 NPT port on the filter head and test fuel pressure before you pull injectors.

Stock replacement vs. upgrade

If you're keeping the truck stock, a new stock-HP injector matched to your year and transmission is the right part. Dodge calibrated the P7100 differently by year and transmission, and the stock replacements here follow a similar split. Larger injector sets built on new Bosch bodies are the mainstream 12-valve power step, used together with a modified P7100 and a bigger turbo. Treat them as part of a matched package, not a bolt-on by themselves. Pump modifications change the factory fuel calibration, so check the rules where your truck is registered and talk to us before you build.

What we carry

XDP new stock-HP injectors: the XD498 for 1994-1998, the XD499 for 1994-1995 trucks with an automatic, and the XD590 for 1996-1998 trucks with a manual. Dynomite Diesel 12-valve stage injector sets and stage nozzle sets, plus the Dynomite Hot Street P-Pump for 1994-1998. An S&S Diesel Motorsport injector feed tube set is also tagged here, but its title lists 2003-2007 5.9L Cummins, a later engine, so check fitment before ordering it for a 12-valve. More options are on our injectors page.

Fitment notes

Stock 12-valve injectors don't interchange with 24-valve injectors, and any injector has to match the pump's build for pop-off pressure and hole size. Read the title for transmission notes: the XD499 is for 1994-1995 automatics and the XD590 for 1996-1998 manuals. A 1998 can be either engine, so confirm you have the P7100 inline pump with a shutoff solenoid on top, not the VP44. Verify by VIN.

Frequently asked questions

Can I put 24-valve injectors in my 12-valve?

No. Stock 12-valve injectors are not interchangeable with 24-valve injectors. Order injectors listed for the 1994-1998 5.9L Cummins and matched to your pump.

Why are some stock injectors listed by transmission?

Dodge calibrated the P7100 by year and transmission: 160 hp on 1994-1995 automatics, 175 hp on 1994-1995 manuals, 180 hp on 1996-1998 automatics and 215 hp on 1996-1998 manuals. XDP's stock replacements follow a similar split, with the XD499 for 1994-1995 automatics, the XD590 for 1996-1998 manuals and the XD498 covering 1994-1998.

What do sizes like 5x.014 or 5x18 mean?

The first number is the hole count and the second is the hole size. Pop pressure is set by the builder to match the pump.

Do bigger injectors need other changes?

Yes. Larger 12-valve injectors are meant to run with a modified P7100 and a bigger turbo as a matched package. Those pump changes alter factory fuel calibration, so plan the whole build with us first.
