Call or Text (352) 722-5295Exhaust accessories on the 1994-1998 RAM 5.9L Cummins
On the 12-valve 5.9L Cummins, exhaust accessories are the small pieces that finish or support the system. On this page that means tips, heat wrap, a V-band clamp and exhaust brakes; manifold stud kits and gaskets for this truck sit on the Manifolds page in this same section. The factory setup runs a 3-inch downpipe off the HX35 turbo into a single exhaust. The standard street upgrade is a 4-inch system, and 5-inch shows up on compound-turbo builds. Every tip, clamp and brake has to match whichever size your truck runs.
What to look at before you buy
There is no failure pattern specific to exhaust accessories on these trucks. Rust and age are what retire mufflers and old pipe on a Ram from these years, so when you add a tip or a clamp, look over the pipe and joints it attaches to. If you tow, watch exhaust temperature too: sustained readings above about 1,250 to 1,300 F are the danger zone on a 12-valve, and a truck on the stock turbo with no gauges is best kept at stock fueling.
Choosing tips, clamps and brakes
Tips are sized by inlet and outlet. Most of the MBRP tips here take a 4-inch inlet and flare to a 4, 5, 6, 7 or 8-inch outlet, in rolled angle cut, straight cut, single-wall turndown, dual-wall angled and black hex styles. Past the size, it comes down to looks and how much tip you want showing past the bumper. Exhaust brakes are the towing accessory on this list. BD lists a turbo-mount brake for 1994-1998 Cummins and a remote-mount 4-inch brake for 1989-1998 Cummins; the right one depends on the turbo and pipe on your truck.
What we carry
MBRP supplies most of the tips, including the T5050 rolled straight cut, T5052 single-wall angle cut, T5081 and T5086 single-wall turndowns, T5049 straight cut, T5073 rolled angle cut and the T5165BLK black hex. Pacific Performance Engineering offers a 3-inch stainless tip and a 4-inch 304 stainless tip. Mishimoto adds the MMEXH-TIP-DSL56 6-inch polished angled rolled-edge tip and the MMTW-235 exhaust heat wrap set. BD Diesel rounds it out with the 2033135 turbo-mount exhaust brake, the 1037135 remote-mount 4-inch exhaust brake, the 1405926 V-band clamp, the 1030900 manual transmission lever switch and the 1030398 Torqloc torque converter control system. Shop every truck we cover in our exhaust section.
Fitment notes
Measure before you order. Downpipe size follows the turbo: the stock HX35 with its T3 flange takes a 3-inch downpipe, and HX40-flange S300 upgrades take a 4-inch. Tailpipe routing and tip position change with cab and bed, since Club Cab short-bed, Regular Cab long-bed and 3500 dually trucks differ. The Torqloc is listed for 1994-2004 Cummins and the lever switch for 1989-2007 Cummins, so confirm your transmission: the 47RH or 47RE automatic, or the NV4500 five-speed manual. A 1998 can be a 12-valve or a 24-valve, so check the engine as well as the year.
Frequently asked questions
What size tip fits my exhaust?
Match the tip inlet to your tailpipe. Most MBRP tips here are built on a 4-inch inlet for the 4-inch systems that are the standard upgrade on these trucks, and the PPE 3-inch stainless tip covers smaller pipe. If your truck still has its original exhaust, measure the tailpipe before ordering.
Should I get the turbo-mount or the remote-mount exhaust brake?
BD's 2033135 mounts at the turbo and is listed for 1994-1998 Cummins, while the 1037135 is a remote-mount unit for 4-inch pipe listed for 1989-1998 Cummins. The choice comes down to the turbo and exhaust on your truck now. If you have changed turbos or pipe size, call us before ordering.
What are the lever switch and Torqloc for?
They are BD control parts. The 1030900 lever switch is built for manual-transmission trucks, and the 1030398 Torqloc is a torque converter control system listed for 1994-2004 Cummins. Check whether your truck has the NV4500 manual or a 47RH or 47RE automatic before you pick.
