1994-1998 Dodge 5.9L Cummins Cooling System Parts

Cooling parts for the 1994-1998 Dodge Ram 2500 and 3500 with the 12-valve 5.9L Cummins: radiators, water pumps, thermostats, hoses, gaskets, coolant and the overflow tank. The thing to know is that these trucks have no widely reported overheating pattern when the system is maintained. What you are fighting is age: rubber, gaskets and freeze plugs that have been in service for decades.

Cooling system on the 1994-1998 Ram 5.9L Cummins

The 5.9L Cummins 6BT keeps it simple. A belt-driven water pump moves the coolant, and a thermostat in its housing feeds an upper coolant pipe and hose to the radiator. A large mechanical fan on a viscous clutch pulls air through the cores, and the fan shroud carries the plastic overflow tank and the washer bottle. The air-to-air intercooler sits ahead of the radiator, so both cores share the same airflow. The system holds 24 to 26 quarts of 50/50 ethylene glycol and distilled water. Factory service called for the first coolant change at 52,500 miles, then every 24,000 miles or 24 months.

What fails and why

Nothing on this system is a known early failure. The patterns come with age and miles:

  • Water pump and thermostat. These are the documented wear items. On a 620,000-mile first-generation 5.9L (a 1993 truck, one year before this body), they and the alternator were the only engine parts ever replaced. Watch for a weep at the pump vent, coolant loss, slow warm-up or running hot.
  • Upper coolant hose and pipe. On these trucks it is roughly 30-year-old rubber. A soft, swollen or weeping upper hose is overdue.
  • Freeze plugs. They corrode and leak at the side of the block, and high coolant-jacket pressure on a performance engine makes it worse.
  • Head gasket seepage. On fueled trucks, head bolts can lose clamp and the gasket pushes coolant into the overflow. Coolant rising in the bottle under boost is the clue.

You may read about cracked '53' blocks. That problem belongs mainly to 1999-2001 24-valve engines and is not a known 12-valve failure, but overheating and poor warm-up are named as accelerators, which is one more reason to keep this system in good shape.

Stock replacement vs. upgrade

For most trucks the right move is OEM-style: water pump, thermostat, hoses, gaskets and fresh coolant. Genuine Cummins thermostats and water pump, Dayco pumps and hoses, an Alliant Power pump, MAHLE gaskets and seals, and a Dorman thermostat housing cover that path. Upgrades make sense when the engine has been turned up or you want parts built to outlast the originals. Freeze plugs are a known leak point on this block, and the BD Diesel Killer Frost Plug Plate is here for that job. Mishimoto's aluminum performance radiator and silicone hose kit, the XDP Xtra Cool radiator and water pump, Mishimoto high- and low-temperature thermostats, and the Fleece Performance Coolant Bypass built for the 1994-1998 engine round out the upgrade side. If the front of the engine is coming apart for the killer dowel pin job, the standing recommendation is to replace the belt and hoses while you are there.

What we carry

Mishimoto supplies radiators, radiator bundles, a silicone radiator hose kit, high- and low-temperature thermostats and its Liquid Chill coolants. Dayco brings water pumps plus molded upper, lower and heater hoses. Fleece Performance Engineering has its coolant bypass kit, bypass hose, O-ring kit and service kit. MAHLE covers the thermostat, thermostat housing cover and water outlet gaskets plus a water pump seal. From Cummins come genuine 180-degree thermostats and a genuine water pump. Coolant also comes from Hot Shot's Secret and Lucas Oil. Dorman supplies a thermostat housing and the coolant recovery tank, XDP an Xtra Cool water pump and direct-fit radiator, Alliant Power a water pump, CSF an OEM-style radiator, and BD Diesel the Killer Frost Plug Plate.

Fitment notes

1998 is a split year. Dodge switched from the 12-valve to the 24-valve ISB partway through, so check the engine, not just the model year: a P7100 inline pump with a mechanical shutoff solenoid on top is a 12-valve, and a VP44 rotary pump with a wiring harness is a 24-valve. Watch the year ranges in the titles too. Dayco upper radiator hose 71715 is listed for 1994-1995 and 71866 for 1996-1998. The Mishimoto silicone hose kit and both radiator bundles are listed for 1994-1997 only. Many pumps and gaskets carry wider ranges because the same part is listed for later 5.9L and 6.7L engines. These parts are listed by engine and year, not by cab, bed or trim, so a WS, ST, Laramie SLT or Sport is matched the same way. Verify by VIN when in doubt.

Frequently asked questions

How often should I change the coolant on a 1994-1998 12-valve?

The factory schedule called for the first change at 52,500 miles, then every 24,000 miles or 24 months, using a 50/50 mix of ethylene glycol and distilled water. Capacity is 24 to 26 quarts. If you run an extended-life coolant, follow the service rating on its label.

Why is coolant climbing in my overflow bottle under boost?

On a fueled truck, that is the classic sign of head gasket seepage after the head bolts lose clamp. It is not a radiator or overflow tank problem, so do not start by throwing cooling parts at it. Have the head gasket and head bolts looked at.

Do second-gen Cummins trucks have an overheating problem?

Not as a known pattern. The running-hot reputation comes from 1989-1991 first-gen trucks without an intercooler on long full-throttle climbs. The 1994-1998 trucks have no widely reported overheating issue when maintained, so if yours runs hot, start with the documented wear items: thermostat, water pump and hoses.

Which water pump should I buy?

The pump is a wear item with no early-failure pattern, so most trucks just need a correct replacement. Choose between the genuine Cummins pump, the Dayco and Alliant Power replacements, or the XDP Xtra Cool pump. The Cummins, Dayco and Alliant Power pumps are listed for 1989-2012 5.9L and 6.7L Cummins, and the XDP pump for 1989-2012 5.9L, which covers your truck.

What else should I replace during the killer dowel pin job?

The fan and shroud come out together for front-cover work, and the overflow tank on the shroud gets drained and removed first. With that much apart, the common recommendation is to replace the belt and hoses at the same time, and to look over the thermostat, fan clutch and freeze plugs.
