1994-1998 Dodge 5.9L Cummins Starters

Gear-reduction starters and starter hardware for the 1994-1998 Dodge Ram 2500 and 3500 with the 12-valve 5.9L Cummins. The factory used a Denso gear-reduction starter here. Before you replace one, know that a well-documented failure lives inside the solenoid, so a click with no crank does not always mean the whole starter is finished.

Starters on the 1994-1998 RAM 5.9L Cummins

The 12-valve Cummins is a 17:1 compression inline six with no glow plugs, just an electric grid heater in the intake. Two batteries in parallel feed a Denso gear-reduction starter to turn it over. The Denso has serviceable solenoid contacts, which matters when you are deciding between a repair and a replacement. The starter also sits in the way of the lift pump. The factory service manual has you remove the starter to reach the lift pump, which is why Turbo Diesel Register members documented a from-above lift-pump method.

What fails and why

At high mileage, the contacts inside the starter solenoid pit and wear. Two symptoms point to them: a click with no crank, or a starter that keeps spinning after the engine has fired. A heavy-duty Denso contact rebuild kit fixes that without replacing the starter. If you would rather put in a new unit and be done with it, that is what the starters here are for.

Not every no-start is the starter. If the engine cranks at normal speed but will not fire, check the fuel shutoff circuit: the solenoid on the injection pump, its relay, the fusible link and fuse #9. Sort out which symptom you have before you buy parts.

Stock replacement vs. upgrade

A stock-style repair on this truck means either rebuilding the factory Denso's solenoid contacts and plunger or installing a new gear-reduction starter. Rebuild kits and new OEM Denso starters are both sold specifically for 12-valve electrical refreshes. The starters in this collection are gear-reduction designs like the factory unit, so they replace it in kind. Choose on brand and finish: the XDP XD257 is a heavy-duty unit in wrinkle black, and the Mean Green 7548 is the other gear-reduction option. Add the XD535 bolt kit so the new starter goes on with fresh hardware.

Fitment notes

The starters here are listed by their makers for 1994-2002, which covers the 12-valve and the 24-valve that replaced it in the middle of 1998. If a no-start sent you here, keep in mind that the fuel shutoff solenoid and its relay are specific to the 1994-1998 P7100 trucks, so on a 1998 confirm the engine before ordering those. The 12-valve has the inline P7100 pump with a mechanical shutoff solenoid on top; the 24-valve has a VP44 rotary pump with a wiring harness. If the listing and your truck do not line up, verify by VIN or give us a call.

Frequently asked questions

Can I rebuild my starter instead of replacing it?

Often, yes. The factory Denso starter has serviceable solenoid contacts, and a heavy-duty contact and plunger rebuild kit cures the click-no-crank and stuck-engaged symptoms. If you would rather install a new starter and move on, the XDP and Mean Green gear-reduction units here are the options.

My starter keeps spinning after the engine starts. What is wrong?

That is one of the two classic signs of pitted, worn solenoid contacts on the Denso starter. The other is a click with no crank. Rebuild the contacts or replace the starter.

Do I have to pull the starter to change the lift pump?

The factory service manual says to, because the starter blocks access. Turbo Diesel Register members documented a from-above method that avoids it. If you are replacing the starter anyway, that is a convenient time to look at the lift pump too.
