Call or Text (352) 722-5295Alternators on the 1994-1998 RAM 5.9L Cummins
The 12-valve Cummins has no engine computer, but the truck still has a PCM, and on trucks with the electronically controlled 47RE automatic it controls shifting and torque converter lockup. One of its key inputs is the throttle position sensor, mounted on the left side next to the injection pump. The alternator's charge and ground wiring crosses the front of the engine beside that TPS harness. That routing is why alternator health matters on this truck for more than keeping the batteries up. A healthy alternator and clean wiring also protect the signals the PCM relies on.
What fails and why
The failure to know about on these trucks is the diodes. As they fail, the alternator puts AC ripple on the electrical system. That noise gets induced into the TPS wires, and the 47RE converter starts locking and unlocking around 35-50 mph. Flickering lights often come with it. The pattern usually appears past 150,000 miles, and a battery with a bad cell makes it worse. The documented fix is a good alternator, charge and ground wires rerouted or shielded away from the TPS harness, clean ground straps and both batteries replaced together.
Stock replacement vs. upgrade
The alternators in this collection are high-output units, so they are a step up from a tired factory alternator. High output is the right call when you have added electrical load beyond what the truck left the factory with. If the truck is stock and you just need it to charge, a high-output unit still does that job; you are buying headroom. Either way, check the cables and grounds on install. A new alternator feeding through corroded or badly routed wiring leaves part of the problem in place.
What we carry
- XDP XD510 HD High Output Alternator in wrinkle black, listed for 1990-1998.5 5.9L Cummins trucks.
- Mean Green 1331 High Output Alternator, listed for 1990-1998 5.9L Cummins trucks.
Pick by finish and brand preference. If you want a charge cable to go with it, the XDP XD422 high-output alternator cable is in our charging and starting parts.
Fitment notes
On a 1998, confirm the engine rather than trusting the model year. Dodge moved to the 24-valve ISB in the middle of 1998, so look at the injection pump: the 12-valve has the inline P7100 with a mechanical shutoff solenoid on top, and the 24-valve has a VP44 rotary pump with a wiring harness. The listings also end at slightly different points (1998.5 for the XDP, 1998 for the Mean Green), so a late-1998 truck is worth a quick call. Belt routing for single-alternator trucks is on a diagram on the radiator support.
Frequently asked questions
Can a bad alternator cause 47RE lockup problems?
Yes. Failing diodes create AC ripple, and because the alternator wiring runs in the same loom as the TPS wires, the noise upsets the PCM's lockup control. The symptom is the converter cycling around 35-50 mph, often with flickering lights.
Should I replace the batteries with the alternator?
If either battery is weak, replace both together. The truck runs two batteries in parallel, and a battery with a bad cell makes ripple-related lockup trouble worse. Test both before you install the new alternator.
Which belt goes with the alternator job?
On 1994-1998 single-alternator trucks with A/C, the Gates K080653 fits. The routing diagram is on the radiator support, so take a look before you pull the old belt.
