2007.5-2010 GMC Duramax LMM Towing Parts

A 2007.5-2010 Sierra 2500HD or 3500HD with the LMM Duramax is rated for 13,000 lb behind the bumper and as much as 16,500 lb on a gooseneck as a dually, and GM offered the bed wiring for it from the factory. What you add is the part that touches the trailer. This page is the towing hardware we stock for those Sierras: ball mounts, frame receivers, air helper springs, connectors and plate lube.

What GM built into the 2007.5-2010 Sierra HD for trailering

The Sierra HD of this era came as a Work Truck, SLE or SLT; there is no Denali HD in this range, since that trim showed up with the 2011 redesign. Under all of them the LMM Duramax makes 365 hp at 3,200 rpm and 660 lb-ft at 1,600 rpm, routed through the Allison 1000 six-speed with Tow/Haul, manual Tap-Up and Tap-Down and automatic grade braking, into an AAM 11.5 in full-float rear axle. The Heavy-Duty Trailering Package is the one to look for on a used truck: a 2.5 in receiver with a 2 in adapter, a sealed 7-way connector and a brake-controller jumper, with an ABS-integrated trailer brake controller as an option. Order codes for camper, fifth-wheel or gooseneck provisions added an 8-way harness run to the front of the box, which is what you tap for an underbed hitch. GVWR is 9,200 lb on a 2500HD, 9,700 to 9,900 lb on a 3500HD single rear wheel and 11,400 lb on a dually, with payload reaching roughly 3,924 lb on a 2500HD and 5,309 lb on a 3500HD dually.

Where towing wears these Sierras out

Put a loaded gooseneck flatbed behind one of these every weekend and the transmission is what tells you first. Owners who tow heavy on 100,000-plus mile trucks report gear hunting, converter lockup slipping earlier than it should and the transmission climbing into overtemp, as fluid degrades and lockup behavior drifts around. Tow/Haul and manual gear selection on grades keep it out of the worst of it; so does fluid on a tow-duty schedule rather than the normal one. The second pattern is simpler: people exceed the weight-carrying limit without knowing it exists. The receiver handles 7,500 lb of trailer and 1,000 lb of tongue as a plain weight-carrying hookup, and GM requires a weight-distributing hitch with sway control above that. Ignore it and the back of the Sierra sits down, the front end gets vague and the trailer starts steering you.

Replace stock, or step up

If you tow a 20 ft car hauler a few times a year, the right answer is boring: an adjustable ball mount with the drop your coupler needs, a clean 7-way socket and correct ball size. The step up is for people who load to the numbers. That means a weight-distribution hitch with sway control for bumper pulls, a hidden or frame-mounted receiver if you want the pull point off the bumper, and air helper springs to kill squat. Air helper springs for the 2001-2010 HD chassis give roughly 5 to 100 psi of adjustment, so you can dial them for an empty bed and for a loaded kingpin without touching the leaf springs. Wireless or in-cab controllers make that a button instead of a chore, and a boost tester is worth having if you want to confirm the charge-air side is sealed before you load up and climb a grade.

What is in this collection

B&W Trailer Hitches supplies the receiver-side hardware: Tow & Stow adjustable ball mounts in 2 in, 2.5 in and 3 in shanks across a wide range of drops, pintle and MultiPro/MultiFlex variants, heavy-duty ball mounts, a triple tow ball mount, bare hitch balls, reducer sleeves and a weight-distribution hitch kit. Big Hitch Products makes the Duramax-specific receivers listed here, including behind-roll-pan and below-roll-pan hidden hitches in 2 in and 2.5 in for both box lengths, a stock-bumper 2.5 in receiver, adjustable pulling hitches and a 7 and 4 pole trailer connector socket with bracket. Air Lift brings the load-leveling side: a LoadLifter 5000 Ultimate Plus stainless steel upgrade, 2 in and 4 in air spring spacers, WirelessONE and WirelessAIR compressor and tank systems, single and heavy-duty dual load controllers, a replacement on-board compressor and air line. Lucas Oil 5th Wheel and Slider Lube handles the hitch plate, and Calibrated Power / DuramaxTuner supplies a boost tester regulator for leak-checking the intake tract. See the broader hitches and Duramax collections for the rest.

Fitment and ordering notes

Order by box length first. Sierra HDs of this era came in regular cab long box, extended cab standard or long box, and crew cab standard or long box, spanning 133.0 in to 167.0 in of wheelbase, and the 3500HD could be single or dual rear wheel. Standard box versus long box changes the fifth-wheel rating and the way the bed harness is routed, and several of the hidden receivers here are sold as short-bed or long-box specific parts. Underbed gooseneck kits follow the generation, not the badge: GNRK1067 is the B&W Turnoverball kit for 2007.5-2010 2500HD and 3500HD, GNRK1012 is for 2011-2015 HD trucks and GNRK1057 is a 1500 kit. Because the 2011 trucks got a new frame, new control arms and new rear springs, do not assume a 2011-and-up listing covers your 2010. Air helper springs and in-bed gooseneck or fifth-wheel mounts do not always coexist, so match the two before ordering either. If you are shopping a 2007, confirm it is the new body with the LMM rather than the 2007 Classic. Verify by VIN or run the fitment checker.

Frequently asked questions

What does the Heavy-Duty Trailering Package include on a 2007.5-2010 Sierra HD?

A 2.5 in receiver hitch with a 2 in adapter, a sealed 7-way trailer connector and a jumper harness for a brake controller. An ABS-integrated trailer brake controller was a separate option, so not every equipped truck has one. Trucks also ordered with camper, fifth-wheel or gooseneck wiring provisions have an 8-way harness run to the front of the box.

Does box length change my fifth-wheel rating?

It does. Fifth-wheel and gooseneck maximums on these trucks run 12,700 to 15,800 lb on a 2500HD and 14,800 to 16,500 lb on a 3500HD, and cab, box and drive configuration all move the number. Box length also changes how the bed wiring is routed. Check your own door-jamb label and manual rather than a range you read online.

Will a 2011 Sierra HD gooseneck kit bolt into my 2010?

No. The B&W Turnoverball kit for 2007.5-2010 2500HD and 3500HD trucks is GNRK1067. GNRK1012 is the 2011-2015 HD kit and GNRK1057 is the 1500 kit. The 2011 redesign changed the frame, so underbed hardware does not cross that split. Send us the year and whether the truck is single or dual rear wheel and we will confirm the right kit.

My Allison hunts gears when I tow in the hills. What is going on?

On higher-mileage trucks that pull heavy, hunting and early lockup slip with rising transmission temperature is a known pattern tied to fluid degradation and lockup variation. Use Tow/Haul, hold a gear manually on long grades and get the fluid serviced on a towing schedule. If temperature keeps climbing or it drops into limp mode, bring it to the shop before the clutches pay for it.
