GMC built these HD trucks with power recirculating-ball steering, standard across Work Truck, SLE and SLT. The gearbox on these Duramax HD trucks sits on the frame rail, the pitman arm bolts to its sector shaft, and that arm swings the center link left and right. An idler arm on the opposite frame rail holds the far end of the link at the same height, and outer tie rods run from the link to each front knuckle. The pitman arm and the idler are the two things keeping that link honest.
What fails and why
Both of those pivots wear early on this independent front end, and once they have play the center link can move where it should not. Owners notice it as wander, a steering wheel with no middle, tire wear on the inside edges, and visible slop when the wheel is rocked. The idler arm and its support are typically the first wear items out front, and pitman wear on top of idler wear is what lets the link rotate. Height and tire size make it faster: trucks built that way have gone through front-end components in 6,000 to 8,000 mile intervals, and simply cranking the torsion bars to level a Sierra expedites the same deterioration.
Stock replacement vs. upgrade
A stock-height Sierra on factory-size tires usually just needs its geometry restored, and an OE-grade arm does that job. Once you are carrying a flatbed, a slide-in camper or a much taller tire, the forged route earns its keep, because the load that destroyed the original part has not gone anywhere. Replacing an arm renews a joint; bracing the center link pivots with double-shear support brackets keeps the link from moving in the first place. The two approaches get combined with heavier tie-rod ends often enough, since the stock ends fold or break under sled-pull loads and wear quickly on heavy tires.
What we carry
The listings here come from PPE and BD Diesel. PPE offers the extreme-duty forged pitman arm by itself and a forged 7/8-inch steering assembly that replaces more of the linkage in one order. BD Diesel's steering upgrade kit is the alternative. The PPE listings are called out as three-groove parts, so compare the grooves and markings on your current arm before ordering.
Fitment notes
Most of this linkage is cataloged across 2001-2010 Duramax HD trucks rather than by LMM alone. The range ends at 2010 because the 2011 Sierra HD came with a new frame and new control arms, and the older steering parts do not transfer. At the front of the range, a 2007 Sierra Classic is the previous body with the LBZ under the hood, so confirm which 2007 you have. Support brackets only work with the center link in the stock position, which rules them out on lifts that hang the link from a drop bracket. Give us cab, box length, 2WD or 4WD and single or dual rear wheel, or use the fitment checker.
Frequently asked questions
What does three-groove mean on a pitman arm listing?
It is a fitment call-out on the part, and the listings for these PPE pieces specify it. Match it against the arm that is actually on your truck instead of assuming, because the wrong call means the arm will not clamp where it should. If you cannot tell what you have, send us the VIN and we will look it up.
Should the idler arm be replaced at the same time?
On these trucks the idler arm and its support are the first wear items on the front end, and pitman wear plus idler wear is what lets the center link rotate. If one end has play, inspect the other before the truck goes back together. Doing both while the front end is apart saves doing the job twice.
Will 2001-2010 steering parts fit a 2011 Sierra HD?
No. The 2011 HD trucks were redesigned with a new frame and new upper and lower control arms, and steering kits for the older trucks stop at 2010. If you own trucks from both sides of that split, order by model year rather than assuming the Duramax parts carry over.
