2007.5-2010 GMC Duramax LMM Alternators

High-output alternators for the 2007.5-2010 GMC Sierra 2500HD and 3500HD with the 6.6L LMM Duramax. The factory setup is one 125-amp alternator feeding two batteries through a circuit fused at 175 amps. Those are useful numbers to know before you hang any more electrical load on a Sierra HD.

Factory charging on a Sierra HD Duramax

Across WT, SLE and SLT, a Duramax Sierra 2500HD or 3500HD left the plant with a single 125-amp alternator. GM's one factory upgrade was the Snow Plow Prep package: ordered with the diesel it brought a second 125-amp alternator, and only on regular cab trucks. The 160-amp plow-prep alternator belongs to the 6.0L gas trucks, not the diesel. Charging on 2007-and-later trucks is PCM-controlled through Regulated Voltage Control. The circuit is fused at 175 amps and the factory wire is good for roughly 160, which is the real ceiling on stock hardware.

Signs you have outgrown the stock unit

Work trucks run into this before anyone else. A service body, a plow, scene lighting, an inverter, a lift gate, a compressor: all of it draws at idle, which is where an alternator makes the least. You see it as voltage sag at idle and lights that dim when something cycles. What a bigger alternator will not fix is a slow crank on a cold morning, which on these trucks usually comes back to weak batteries, or a truck that goes dead sitting for a few days, which points at parasitic draw. Owners have reported key-off draw in the amps, and because the two batteries sit in parallel, one failing battery drags the other down with it.

How much output do you need

If nothing has been added to the truck, stock output is all it ever needed and there is no reason to chase more. If the truck earns its living with accessories, step up, but treat it as a system. Going past the factory circuit means replacing the 175-amp fuse with a 225-amp and running 2-gauge or heavier charge and ground cable. It also pays to clean and tighten the ground straps, because a bad ground reads like a weak alternator on a meter.

What we carry

The high-output alternators listed for these Sierra HD trucks are the Mean Green 8292 and XDP's XD351 HD in wrinkle black, both catalogued for 2007.5-2010 6.6L Duramax. Heavy-duty battery cables, gear reduction starters, a starter solenoid and battery hardware for the same truck sit on the charging and starting page, and the full 6.6L catalog is on the Duramax page.

Fitment notes

Make sure yours is a GMT900 truck. The LMM arrived mid-2007 with the new body, so an early 2007 Sierra HD may be the GMT800 Classic with the LBZ instead. Count alternators before ordering if the truck has Snow Plow Prep, since dual-alternator regular cabs use their own brackets and wiring. Do not assume anything from 2011 up carries back: that year brought the LML and a largely new truck. Cab and bed choice does not change the alternator, though it can change cable lengths. The fitment checker on each product page is the quick answer and the VIN is the certain one.

Frequently asked questions

Is the alternator on my Sierra the same as the one on a gas 6.0L?

No. The Duramax trucks use their own charging hardware, and the 160-amp plow-prep alternator referenced for these trucks is a 6.0L gas item. Shop by engine rather than by body, and confirm with the fitment checker before you order.

Why does my voltage reading bounce around at idle?

From 2007 on, GM manages charging through the PCM with Regulated Voltage Control, so system voltage is meant to move with conditions instead of sitting on one number. A wandering reading by itself is not a failing alternator. Judge it by whether voltage sags under load at idle, and by what the batteries test at.

Can I add a second alternator like a factory plow truck?

Factory dual alternators came only with Snow Plow Prep on regular cab Duramax trucks, and they use their own brackets and wiring, so it is not a bolt-on for a crew cab. For most owners a single high-output unit with an upgraded fuse and cables is the practical route. Call us before you buy if you are not sure which camp your truck is in.
