For 2020, Ford put the 10R140 behind every 6.7L pickup and chassis cab. Inside it are four planetary gearsets, one mechanical one-way clutch and six friction clutches, with upper and lower valve bodies and six linear shift solenoids. On the diesel trucks a separate transmission control module (TCM) runs it, not the engine computer. First gear is 4.615, tenth is 0.632, there are three overdrive ratios, and the torque converter locks up in gears 2 through 10. Ford rates the unit for the 475 hp and 1,050 lb-ft the engine makes. For 2020 the fluid cooler moved to the lower front of the transmission, under the bellhousing, with a coolant control valve on the return hose to manage temperature. The whole thing takes 18.1 to 18.2 quarts of MERCON ULV through a Motorcraft FT-221 filter.
What fails and why
The 2020 model year had two transmission recalls. Under NHTSA 20V365000 (Ford 20S33), the torque converter damper plate on certain trucks was not tempered and could fracture. The symptoms were an engine stall while stopping, more brake pedal effort, and a hard re-engagement when you select Drive or Reverse. Dealers replaced the transmission assembly. Under 22V256000 (Ford 22S22), a washer inside the 10R140 could break up and lodge metal debris in the Park mechanism. That shows up as harsh shifts, grinding, or a truck that will not go into or hold Park. Dealers replaced the gearset.
Separate from the recalls, Ford TSB 21-2420 covers 2020 trucks with harsh engagement or harsh, delayed shifts caused by sticking valves in the main control valve body, with or without codes like P0729, P0731-P0736 and P2700-P2705. Past warranty age, transmission builders report valve body crossleakage, converter clutch fatigue, pump pressure loss and clutch wear. Their estimate is 100,000 to 150,000 miles on an unmodified truck before major work, sooner with big tires or heavy towing. The common thread is heat. Shift quality changes when the truck is hot and towing, and fluid condition goes downhill.
Stock replacement vs. upgrade
On a truck that mostly runs empty, factory service done on time is the baseline. Ford's 2022 schedule calls for fluid at 150,000 miles in light use and 60,000 miles in severe duty, and Diesel Hub lists 50,000 for severe. If you tow, you are on the severe schedule. Transmission builders go further on hard-working trucks and recommend a hot flush with fluid and filter every 25,000 miles. For hard parts, builders point first to a reworked valve body, which is bench work for a transmission shop, then to a deep cast-aluminum pan that adds fluid capacity. Upgraded converters round out the usual list for towing trucks. If you have a 2020 with harsh shifts that is still under warranty, start at the dealer. The TSB 21-2420 break-in routine or valve body overhaul is their repair.
What we carry
For cooling, Mishimoto offers the MMTC-F2D-20SL cooler titled for the 2020-2022 6.7L Powerstroke, a range of universal fluid coolers and a heavy-duty cooler with its own fan. BD Diesel adds Xtruded single and double-stacked auxiliary coolers, a universal cooler electric fan and a transmission filter service kit. For pans, PPE makes a heavy-duty cast aluminum 10R140 pan plus a fill adapter and a fill plug for its pans, and SPE Motorsport makes a deep 10R140 pan. Fluid comes from Hot Shot's Secret, including its Shift Restore additive, and from Lucas Oil. ATS Diesel Performance supplies a torque converter and a drain plug for ATS pans and differential covers, and XDP MFG supplies a flex plate bolt kit.
Fitment notes
The 2020 change is the line that matters. 2017-2019 Super Duty trucks have the 6R140 on MERCON LV, and 2020-2022 trucks have the 10R140 on MERCON ULV. Pans, filters, coolers and fluids do not cross that split. Some products here carry wider ranges in their titles, like the ATS converter listed for 2011-2019 and the XDP bolt kit listed for 2011-2021, so read each title against your model year. Many of the coolers are universal and need lines, fittings and a place to mount. If your truck ever needs the TSB valve body work, the separator plate kit depends on the driveshaft yoke: LC3Z-7A008-E for a fixed yoke, LC3Z-7A008-F for a slip yoke. When in doubt, verify by VIN.
Frequently asked questions
Do 2019 transmission parts fit my 2020-2022 F-250?
No. The 2017-2019 trucks use the 6-speed 6R140 on MERCON LV, and 2020-2022 trucks use the 10-speed 10R140 on MERCON ULV. Pans, filters, coolers and fluids do not interchange across that split, so shop by model year and confirm by VIN.
What fluid does the 10R140 take, and how much?
Ford specifies MERCON ULV to the WSS-M2C949-A standard. Total capacity is 18.1 to 18.2 quarts, and the 2021 owner's manual lists an approximate dry fill of 17.1 liters. Check any fluid's label for that spec before it goes in.
How often should a towing truck get a transmission service?
Ford's 2022 schedule says 60,000 miles for severe duty versus 150,000 for light use, and Diesel Hub lists 50,000 for severe. Transmission builders recommend a hot flush with fluid and filter every 25,000 miles on trucks that work hard. Towing heat is what wears the fluid down.
My 2020 F-350 stalls when I come to a stop. Is that the transmission?
It can be. Recall 20V365000 (Ford 20S33) covers certain 2020 Super Duty trucks whose torque converter damper plate may fracture, and the listed symptoms are an engine stall while stopping, more brake pedal effort and a hard re-engagement into Drive or Reverse. Run your VIN for open recalls; the dealer remedy was a replacement transmission assembly.
Is a deep transmission pan worth adding?
On a truck that tows or works hot, transmission builders rank a deep cast-aluminum pan as the next step after a valve body upgrade because it adds fluid capacity. Extra fluid is one way to work on the heat problem the 10-speed is known for under heavy service. Check each pan's listing for capacity and the fill and drain hardware it uses.
