Call or Text (352) 722-5295Batteries on the 2020-2022 Ford 6.7L Powerstroke
Ford's owner's manual lists two Motorcraft BXT-65-750 batteries for the diesel Super Duty. That's a Group 65 case rated at 750 cold cranking amps. The pair carries the cranking load on a cold start, when the 6.7L relies on one ceramic glow plug per cylinder rather than an intake grid heater. The alternator keeps both charged: a 175- or 220-amp primary, plus a 157-amp secondary on dual-alternator trucks.
What fails and why
Batteries are the first suspect when this engine starts hard. Weak batteries, voltage drop across cables and grounds during cranking, and glow plug failure are the most common causes of cold-start trouble on the 6.7L. Three to five years is a typical battery life. Because the pair ages together, a failing battery drags the good one down, and the symptoms are slow cranking, dash resets and hard starts after the truck sits. Load-test both batteries and check cranking voltage drop before you suspect glow plugs or fuel.
Choosing a hold-down
A hold-down clamps the battery in its tray so it stays put. An aftermarket hold-down is a natural add-on when you're under the hood replacing batteries anyway, and it's a way to dress up the engine bay or replace factory hardware you no longer have. Choose by material, finish and the year range on the listing. If you're buying new batteries at the same time, match the factory Group 65, 750 CCA spec.
What we carry
S&B makes the 72-1000 billet battery hold-down bracket set, listed for 2011-2022 6.7L trucks. SPE Motorsport offers the S100166 billet battery hold down, and No Limit Fabrication builds the 67BH battery hold down kit. Both of those are listed for 2011-2024 6.7L trucks. Check each listing to see whether it covers both batteries or one.
Fitment notes
These hold-downs are listed for 6.7L Super Duty trucks going back to 2011, which covers the 2020-2022 trucks on this page. 2023 brought an all-new fifth-generation Super Duty, so if you own a newer truck, go by the end year on each listing. Chassis cabs share the 6.7L but are a separate product line from the pickups. Confirm fitment by VIN with the checker on the product page.
Frequently asked questions
Does this collection include batteries?
No. It carries battery hold-downs from S&B, SPE Motorsport and No Limit Fabrication. For replacement batteries, the factory spec is two Group 65, 750 CCA units, the Motorcraft BXT-65-750.
Can I replace just one battery?
You can, but the two batteries age together and a failing one drags the other down. Load-test both. If one is weak and the pair is in the three-to-five-year range, replacing both is the safer move.
My truck starts hard. Is it the batteries?
Start there. Weak batteries are one of the most common causes of hard cold starts on the 6.7L, along with voltage drop on the cables and grounds and glow plug failure. Load-test both batteries and check voltage drop under crank before you look at glow plugs or fuel.
Will these hold-downs fit a 2023 F-250?
The SPE Motorsport and No Limit Fabrication pieces are listed through 2024. The S&B set is listed through 2022. Since 2023 started a new generation, go by the listing and verify by VIN.
