Call or Text (352) 722-5295Alternators on the 2017-2019 Ford 6.7L Powerstroke
Ford sized the charging system by trim. XL and XLT diesels came with a 175-amp alternator, while Lariat, King Ranch and Platinum got 220 amps, which was also optional on XL and XLT. Above that, Ford offered dual alternators totaling 332 amps, standard on the Limited, or 377 amps, and Snow Plow Prep adds the extra-heavy-duty alternator. That output keeps two 12-volt, 750 CCA batteries charged and runs everything from the ceramic glow plugs at start-up to the upfitter switches and 400-watt inverter outlet on trucks that have them. Every truck on this page runs the 6.7L Powerstroke.
What fails and why
There is no documented pattern of chronic alternator failure on the 2017-2019 6.7L, so this page is mostly about added load rather than a known weak part. Plow lights, a winch, work lights, an inverter or a camper all pull from a system that may have left the factory at 175 amps. When a charging or starting complaint does show up, check the simple things first. Corroded battery cables are a cited cause of glow-system and cold-start trouble on these trucks, and long cranking more often traces to glow plugs, batteries and cables, or CP4.2 rail-pressure loss.
Stock replacement vs. upgrade
Ford's own upgrade was the factory dual-alternator package, which means a second alternator, a bracket and a different belt. A high-output replacement for the alternator is the other path. Compare your trim's factory rating with your real accessory load. A 175-amp XL or XLT running a plow or upfit equipment has the most to gain from a higher-output unit. A 220-amp truck with stock accessories may only need a like-for-like replacement when the original wears out.
What we carry
The high-output options here are the Mean Green MG1627, a 300-amp high-output alternator, and the XDP XD352, an HD high-output alternator in a wrinkle black finish. Both are catalogued for 2011-2022 6.7L Powerstroke trucks, which covers all three model years of this generation.
Fitment notes
Single- and dual-alternator trucks use different belts, tensioner routing and brackets, so confirm which you have before ordering. Single-alternator 2017-2019 trucks run Motorcraft belt JK-81356 with tensioner BT-130, and dual-alternator trucks use belt JK-81413. If the belt or tensioner is worn, replace it while the alternator is out. Chassis cab F-350 through F-550 trucks carry a different engine rating and many different parts, so verify by VIN.
Frequently asked questions
How many amps does the factory alternator on a 2017-2019 Super Duty diesel put out?
175 amps on XL and XLT, and 220 amps on Lariat, King Ranch and Platinum (optional on XL and XLT). Dual-alternator trucks are rated 332 amps, standard on the Limited, or 377 amps. Snow Plow Prep trucks have the extra-heavy-duty alternator.
Which belt does my truck use?
Single-alternator 2017-2019 trucks use Motorcraft JK-81356 with tensioner BT-130. Dual-alternator trucks use JK-81413. Routing and brackets differ between the two, so count alternators before ordering a belt or a replacement unit.
My truck is slow to start. Is it the alternator?
Usually not. On these years, hard cold starts are mostly glow plugs or corroded battery cables that keep the glow system from working, and long cranking can also trace to CP4.2 rail-pressure loss. Check the plugs, both batteries and the cables before buying charging parts.
