2017-2019 Ford 6.7L Powerstroke Brake Parts

Brake service items for the 2017-2019 Ford F-250, F-350 and F-450 Super Duty with the 6.7L Powerstroke: synthetic brake fluid, brake and contact cleaners, and billet master cylinder hardware. The one thing to know about brakes on these trucks is that wear follows towing duty, and Ford's tow ratings assume a properly set trailer brake controller.

Brakes on the 2017-2019 Ford 6.7L Powerstroke

Every 2017-2019 Super Duty stops on power four-wheel disc brakes with ABS, backed by AdvanceTrac with roll stability control and trailer sway control. Ford gave this generation big rotors: 14.29 inches front and rear on the F-250 and F-350, and 15.39 inches front with 15.74 inches rear on the F-450 pickup. That hardware is sized for what a 6.7L Powerstroke truck usually does, which is pull something heavy. An integrated trailer brake controller with the Smart Trailer Tow Connector came standard on dually (DRW) trucks and on higher trims, and was optional on the single-rear-wheel XL.

What fails and why

These trucks don't carry a known chronic brake defect. What wears them out is work. Pull a heavy gooseneck or fifth-wheel without the trailer brake controller set right and the truck's own brakes end up doing the trailer's stopping too. The result is fast pad wear and hot rotors. Ford's SAE J2807 tow ratings assume a working trailer brake controller and correct tongue or kingpin loading. So if you're burning through pads, check the controller setting and the trailer's brakes before you blame the truck. The other half of the system you can service in the driveway is the fluid and the master cylinder reservoir, and that's where this collection starts.

Stock replacement vs. upgrade

Start with fluid. Use the DOT rating your owner's guide calls for and don't change ratings on a guess. Lucas Oil makes both DOT 3 and DOT 4 synthetic fluid, so you can match whichever your truck specifies. When pads and rotors come due on a truck that tows, towing-grade replacements are the sensible step up, but they have to be sized to your rotors: 14.29 inches on the F-250 and F-350, 15.39 inches front and 15.74 inches rear on the F-450. If your single-rear-wheel truck left the plant without the integrated trailer brake controller, a factory-style retrofit using the Smart Trailer Tow Connector puts the trailer's brakes to work, which is what Ford's ratings assume. This collection covers fluid, cleaners and reservoir hardware. For pads, rotors or a controller retrofit, call the shop and we'll help you match parts to your hubs.

What we carry

  • Lucas Oil fluids: 10825 DOT 3 Synthetic Brake Fluid and 10827 DOT 4 Synthetic Brake Fluid.
  • Lucas Oil cleaners: 10906 Non-Chlorinated Brake Parts Cleaner for rotors, calipers and hardware during a pad job, and 10799 Contact Cleaner for electrical connectors.
  • WCFab (Wehrli Custom Fabrication) hardware: a billet aluminum brake master cylinder cap, the WCF100198 brake master cylinder cover, and a billet aluminum power steering reservoir cap to go with them.

The WCFab pieces are built for 2017-and-later 6.7L trucks. The fluids and cleaners aren't tied to one model; just pick the fluid by the DOT rating your truck specifies.

Fitment notes

Super Duty brakes aren't one-size-fits-all across this generation. F-250 and F-350 single-rear-wheel trucks use 8 lugs on a 170 mm circle, the F-350 dually uses 8 lugs on 200 mm, and the F-450 uses 10 lugs on 225 mm, so rotors and hubs do not interchange between them. Wheels run 17, 18 or 20 inches on the F-250 and F-350 and 19.5 inches on the F-450. If you're adding air springs or a gooseneck hitch, that hardware mounts near the rear brake lines, and access to those lines can complicate the install. Chassis cab F-350, F-450 and F-550 owners should verify fitment by VIN with the fitment checker on the product page.

Frequently asked questions

Should I use DOT 3 or DOT 4 brake fluid in my 2017-2019 Super Duty?

Use the rating your owner's guide lists for your truck. We carry both Lucas Oil DOT 3 and DOT 4 synthetic fluid so you can match it. If you aren't sure which one applies, call us with your VIN before you open the reservoir.

Why are my brakes wearing so fast when I tow?

Usually the trailer isn't doing its share. Ford's tow ratings assume a properly set trailer brake controller and correct tongue or kingpin weight. When the controller setting is low or the trailer brakes are weak, the truck's pads and rotors carry the load, wear fast and run hot.

Will F-250 rotors fit my F-450?

No. The F-250 and F-350 use 14.29-inch rotors front and rear, while the F-450 runs 15.39 inches front and 15.74 inches rear on a 10-lug, 225 mm pattern. Even the F-350 dually uses a different 200 mm pattern than the single-rear-wheel trucks, so order brake hardware by exact model and wheel setup.

My truck doesn't have the built-in trailer brake controller. Can it be added?

Ford made the integrated controller with the Smart Trailer Tow Connector standard on dually trucks and higher trims, and optional on the single-rear-wheel XL. A factory-style retrofit is an upgrade path for single-rear-wheel trucks that left the plant without it. Call the shop and we'll talk through what your truck needs.
