Ford offered a 5th-Wheel/Gooseneck Trailer Tow Prep Package on these trucks. It puts attachment points, called pucks, in the bed floor and adds a 7-pin connector in the bed wall. A hitch built for that prep locks into the pucks. Ford and Reese sold a 5th-wheel kit for it, and that kit requires the 8-ft box. Combined ratings reach 35,000 lb GCWR on the F-350 and 40,000 to 40,400 lb on the F-450, but the F-350's 35,000-lb figure only comes with the High-Capacity Trailer Tow Package: Crew Cab DRW, 172-inch wheelbase, 4x4, diesel and a 4.30 limited-slip axle. Without it, the F-350 is rated at 31,900 lb GCWR. Every 2015-2016 diesel pickup runs the same 440-hp 6.7L Powerstroke and 6R140 TorqShift, so the limits come from chassis, axle and hitch.

Choosing a 5th-wheel hitch

Answer three questions first. Does your bed have the factory pucks? Is it the 8-ft box? What does your trailer weigh loaded? The trailer you can pull is capped by the lowest of three ratings: the truck's, the hitch's and the trailer's own. Pin weight also comes out of payload, which Ford rated at up to 4,240 lb on a 2015 F-250 and 7,260 lb on a 2015 F-350, or 4,040 and 7,050 lb for 2016. Add pin weight to everything else in the cab and bed before you compare.

Fitment notes

The Companion listing names the F-250 and F-350. If you have an F-450 pickup, call before you order; it rides on 19.5-inch wheels and a Dana S110, and its ratings do not carry over to other models. Short-box trucks with the 6.75-ft bed fall outside Ford's 5th-wheel kit. To confirm the prep package, look for the pucks in the bed floor or verify by VIN.

Do I need the factory prep package for this hitch?

The B&W Companion RVK3300 is listed as a Ford OEM hitch, made for trucks with the factory in-bed pucks. If your bed has no pucks, call us and we will go over your options before you buy.

Can I pull a 5th-wheel with the 6.75-ft bed?

Ford's own 5th-wheel kit for these trucks requires the 8-ft box. If you run the short box, call us before ordering so we can check what works with your truck and trailer.

Is the 35,000-lb GCWR standard on every F-350?

No. It takes the High-Capacity Trailer Tow Package on a Crew Cab DRW 172-inch 4x4 diesel with the 4.30 limited-slip axle, which also brings max front springs, a wide-track front axle and fender flares. Without the package the F-350's GCWR is 31,900 lb.

What is the slider lube for?
