2015-2016 Ford 6.7L Powerstroke Steering Boxes

Steering boxes for 2015-2016 Ford F-250, F-350 and F-450 trucks with the 6.7L Powerstroke. The factory gear is a hydraulic power unit, and Ford built it to different ratios for 4x2 trucks, 4x4 trucks and the F-450, so matching the box to your exact model matters more than matching the year.

The steering box on the 2015-2016 Ford 6.7L Powerstroke

The 2015-2016 Super Duty uses a hydraulic power recirculating-type steering gear. Ford lists the ratio at 20.49:1 on a 4x2 F-250 or F-350, 20.41:1 on a 4x4, and 17.8:1 average on the F-450 pickup. The F-450 also got stronger steering gears and linkages for 2015, the same year it picked up a new rear axle and brakes. On a 4x4 the box drives the pitman arm and the drag link hangs from that arm; a 4x2 Twin-I-Beam truck uses different linkage.

The gearbox in this collection is listed for 2011-2016 6.7L Powerstroke trucks, which fits the pattern on these trucks: steering parts carry across more model years than body parts do.

When a steering box needs replacing

No failure pattern specific to the 2015-2016 gear is documented, so there's no mileage where it's due. Treat the box as a wear item and replace it when inspection points to the box. The one steering complaint on record for these years, a shake after a bump at speed on a 2016 F-250, is consistent with worn tie rod ends, drag link or track bar, so rule those out before you buy a gear.

What we carry

  • XDP XD744 Stock+ power steering gearbox, new rather than remanufactured, listed for 2011-2016 6.7L Powerstroke trucks.
  • BDS Suspension dual steering stabilizer kit for 4WD trucks from stock height up to 2 inches of lift, listed 2005-2026 6.7L Powerstroke. Ford made a single steering damper standard on these trucks, and this kit moves you to a dual setup.

Fitment notes

Read the gearbox listing against your truck's drivetrain and model. The ratios differ between 4x2, 4x4 and F-450, and the F-450's 17.8:1 gear was strengthened for 2015, so an F-450 owner should confirm the listing covers that truck before ordering. The BDS stabilizer kit is 4WD only and sized for up to 2 inches of lift. Verify by VIN or use the fitment checker on the product page.

Frequently asked questions

Is the F-450 steering box the same as the F-250 and F-350 box?

No. The F-450 pickup runs a 17.8:1 average ratio against 20.41:1 on a 4x4 F-250 or F-350, and Ford strengthened its steering gear for 2015. Treat F-450 steering parts as model-specific.

Does a 2011-2014 steering box fit a 2015 or 2016 truck?

The XD744 in this collection is listed for 2011-2016 6.7L Powerstroke trucks, so the 2015 refresh doesn't split that listing. The F-450 is the one to double-check, because Ford upgraded its steering gear for 2015. Match your model and drivetrain against the listing.

Is the XD744 new or remanufactured?

New. XDP lists it as a new Stock+ gearbox. There's no documented failure pattern for the 2015-2016 gear, so buy it when inspection confirms the box is worn, not on a schedule.

Could a bad steering box cause death wobble?

Check the linkage first. The one NHTSA complaint for a 2016 F-250 describes violent shaking after a bump at speed, and that symptom is consistent with worn tie rod ends, a worn drag link or a worn track bar. Rule those out before you replace the box.
