Call or Text (352) 722-5295Coolant on the 2015-2016 Ford 6.7L Powerstroke
The primary loop holds about 7.25 to 7.75 gallons. It cools the block and heads, the oil cooler, the water-cooled turbo, the heater core and, from 2015, both halves of the EGR cooler. The secondary loop holds about 2 gallons and cools the charge-air cooler, the fuel cooler and the transmission cooler. Each loop fills through its own degas bottle. From the factory, both get Motorcraft Orange VC-3-B concentrate mixed 50/50 with distilled water.
What goes wrong
The documented coolant problem on this Powerstroke is neglect. Ford's interval is 105,000 miles or 6 years for the first change, then every 45,000 miles or 36 months. On severe duty the first change comes at 60,000 miles or 2,400 hours. Run coolant past that, or mix the wrong coolant into either loop, and you invite corrosion and clogged passages in the EGR cooler and the charge-air cooler. Neither is a part you want to replace because of old coolant.
Choosing a coolant
Start with what's in the truck now. For a top-off, use the same coolant that's already in that loop. If the truck still has the factory orange and you want to stay with Ford's spec, compare the product description against VC-3-B before you pour. If you want to switch to a different chemistry, such as a heavy-duty extended-life formula, drain and refill the whole loop instead of topping off. Pre-mixed coolant saves you the distilled-water step; concentrates and additives get mixed to the label.
What we carry
- Mishimoto Liquid Chill: pre-mixed coolant in yellow and purple, Liquid Chill synthetic coolant, a pre-mixed synthetic, and the Liquid Chill radiator coolant additive.
- Hot Shot's Secret: 150K-mile extended-life green, 150,000-mile heavy-duty extended-life yellow and 750,000-mile heavy-duty ultra-long-life red, each in a 1-gallon jug.
- Lucas Oil 10640 Super Coolant.
Fitment notes
Coolant isn't keyed to a model year the way a hose is, so these listings may not carry a 2015-2016 range. What matters is chemistry and volume. For a full service on both loops, plan on roughly 7.5 gallons for the primary and 2 for the secondary; if you're mixing concentrate 50/50, half of that is distilled water. The 2015-2016 degas cap is Motorcraft RS-345, so if you replace the cap during service, make sure the new one is listed for your year.
Frequently asked questions
How much coolant does a 2015-2016 6.7L Powerstroke hold?
About 7.25 to 7.75 gallons in the primary loop and about 2 gallons in the secondary loop. Each loop has its own degas bottle. If you're using concentrate at 50/50, half of that volume is distilled water.
Can I mix different coolants in my Super Duty?
Mixing the wrong coolant into either loop is a documented maintenance error on this engine, and it leads to corrosion and clogged EGR cooler and charge-air cooler passages. Top off with what's already in there. To change types, drain and refill the loop.
When should I change coolant on a 2015-2016 F-250 or F-350?
Ford calls for 105,000 miles or 6 years the first time, then every 45,000 miles or 36 months. Severe duty moves the first change to 60,000 miles or 2,400 hours. Do both loops.
