2015-2016 Ford 6.7L Powerstroke Brake Parts

Brake parts and service supplies for the 2015-2016 Ford F-250, F-350 and F-450 Super Duty with the 6.7L Powerstroke. Brake fluid, cleaners, lifted-truck brake lines and a billet master cylinder cap. The one thing to know: F-250 and F-350 run 14.29-inch rotors front and rear, while the 2015-2016 F-450 pickup has its own larger 10-lug brakes.

Brakes on the 2015-2016 Ford 6.7L Powerstroke

Every 2015-2016 Super Duty pickup stops on power four-wheel vented disc brakes with ABS as standard. On the F-250 and F-350 the rotors measure 14.29 inches front and rear. The F-450 pickup steps up to 14.53-inch front and 15.35-inch rear rotors on 10-lug hubs. Ford built towing help into the system too: trailer sway control, hill start assist and an integrated trailer brake controller that is standard on dual-rear-wheel trucks and optional on single-rear-wheel trucks. The factory fluid is Motorcraft PM-20, a DOT 4 LV fluid. The engine plays a part as well. The 2015-2016 6.7L Powerstroke got a larger Garrett GT3788V variable-geometry turbo, and Ford credits it with more engine-exhaust braking to take load off the wheel brakes and the transmission.

What fails and why

There is no documented recurring brake defect on these model years, so most brake work here comes down to wear and heat. Heat is the one to watch on a diesel that tows. When exhaust braking is not working, the service brakes carry the whole load on a long grade, and you feel it as hot brakes and fade on the way down. If your truck pulls heavy and the exhaust brake has gone quiet, sort that out before you blame the pads. One safety item belongs here even though it is steering, not brakes. Icon's FSD 2.5 Centerline steering stabilizer kit, part 65050, sold for 2005-2021 F-250 and F-350 4x4 trucks, was recalled under campaign 20E090 because a foam ring could block the piston ports and lock the steering. If you bought a used 4x4 wearing that kit, check it before you tow.

Stock replacement vs. upgrade

For pads and rotors, stay at factory size: 14.29-inch on the F-250 and F-350, and the F-450's own 14.53/15. For fluid, match the DOT 4 LV spec. Upgrades on this system usually follow something else you changed on the truck. A 4- to 8-inch lift calls for brake lines built for that lift height. A billet aluminum master cylinder cap is an appearance swap. And if you tow with a single-rear-wheel truck that left the factory without the integrated trailer brake controller, adding the factory-style controller is the upgrade that matters most.

What we carry

Lucas Oil covers the service side: DOT 3 and DOT 4 synthetic brake fluid, non-chlorinated brake parts cleaner and contact cleaner. Ford calls for DOT 4 LV, so read the label and match the spec before you top off or flush. BDS Suspension front and rear brake line sets are built for 4WD trucks running a 4- to 8-inch lift; the listings read 2011-2015, so run the fitment checker if you own a 2016. Wehrli Custom Fabrication makes the billet aluminum master cylinder cap here; its title reads 2017-2026, so confirm it on the product page before you order for a 2015 or 2016.

Fitment notes

Brake parts on these trucks split by model and rear-wheel setup more than by year.

  • F-250 and F-350 SRW: 8 wheel studs, 170 mm bolt circle, 14.29-inch rotors front and rear. Rotor diameter did not change from 2014 to 2015.
  • F-350 DRW: 8 studs, with rear hubs on a 200 mm bolt circle instead of the SRW's 170 mm.
  • F-450 pickup: 10 studs, 225 mm bolt circle, 14.53-inch front and 15.35-inch rear rotors and 19.5-inch wheels from 2015. A 2014 F-450 used 14.29-inch rotors, 17-inch wheels and the 200 mm bolt circle, so its parts do not carry over.
  • Lifted trucks: match brake lines to your lift height and drivetrain.

When in doubt, verify by VIN before you order.

Frequently asked questions

Did the brakes change between 2014 and 2015 on the F-250 and F-350?

Not in rotor size. Ford lists 14.29-inch front and rear rotors for the F-250 and F-350 on both sides of the 2015 refresh. The F-450 pickup is the one that changed: for 2015 it moved to 14.53-inch front and 15.35-inch rear rotors, 10-lug 225 mm hubs and 19.5-inch wheels.

What brake fluid does a 2015-2016 6.7L Powerstroke take?

Ford's spec is Motorcraft PM-20, a DOT 4 LV fluid. If you use an aftermarket fluid, check that its label meets the same spec. Lucas Oil DOT 4 synthetic is on this page; compare its rating to DOT 4 LV before you pour.

Does my truck have the integrated trailer brake controller?

Every dual-rear-wheel 2015-2016 Super Duty got it as standard. On single-rear-wheel F-250 and F-350 trucks it was optional, so a VIN check is the quick answer. Ford verified the controller for electric drum and certain electric-over-hydraulic trailer brakes. If your SRW truck doesn't have one, adding the factory-style controller is the clean fix.

Why do my brakes get hot towing down long grades?

One cause specific to this truck is lost exhaust braking. Ford credits the 2015 turbo with more engine-exhaust braking, specifically to cut wear on the wheel brakes and transmission. If the exhaust brake isn't doing its job, the pads and rotors take that load and fade sooner. Get the exhaust brake checked, then look at pad and rotor condition.

Do I need new brake lines after a lift?

BDS Suspension sells front and rear line sets made for 4WD trucks running a 4- to 8-inch lift. If your lift falls in that range, plan on lines matched to it. Check the year range on each listing against your truck before you order.
