Differential fluid on the 2015-2016 Ford 6.7L Powerstroke

The Sterling 10.5 under the F-250 and F-350 SRW with the 6.7L Powerstroke holds 3.3 to 3.6 quarts. Ford's change interval is 100,000 miles in normal service and 50,000 in severe service. The 4x4 front holds 2.7 to 2.9 quarts and runs 150,000 miles normal or 50,000 severe. Run the rear low and you will hear gear noise; on the front, a whine is the symptom to watch. The F-350 dually's Dana 80 and the F-450's Dana S110 are different axles, so check your owner's manual for their fill.

What we carry

Hot Shot's Secret gear oil in its ADRENALINE Synthetic Racing and Blue Diamond HD Synthetic lines, each offered in 75W-90, 80W-110 and 85W-140. Royal Purple 01301 Max-Gear, a 75W-140 synthetic, the grade Ford lists for the Sterling rear. Lucas Oil 10043 Heavy Duty 80W-90, the front differential grade. Motorcraft XL-3 Additive Friction Modifier.

Choosing a grade

Start with Ford's grade for the axle you are filling, and buy enough for the capacity above. If you are weighing a grade other than Ford's spec, call us first and tell us how the truck is used. Whether you need XL-3 depends on the differential in your axle. Ford offered limited-slip and electronic-locking rears on these trucks, so check the owner's manual before adding it.

Frequently asked questions

What gear oil does the rear axle take?

On F-250 and F-350 single-rear-wheel trucks with the Sterling 10.5, Ford calls for 75W-140 synthetic, 3.3 to 3.6 quarts. Change it every 100,000 miles in normal use or every 50,000 in severe use.

Can I use the same gear oil front and rear?

Not to Ford's spec. The 4x4 front differential takes 80W-90, 2.7 to 2.9 quarts, on a 150,000-mile normal or 50,000-mile severe interval, while the rear takes 75W-140 synthetic. Buy for each axle separately.
