2011-2014 Ford 6.7L Powerstroke Torque Converters

Performance torque converters for the 6R140 TorqShift six-speed behind the 6.7L Powerstroke in 2011-2014 Ford F-250, F-350 and F-450 Super Duty trucks. These trucks still carry Ford's original single-friction-plate converter; the high-capacity converter did not arrive until 2015. That matters if you tow heavy or add power.

The torque converter on the 2011-2014 Ford 6.7L Powerstroke

Every 6.7L Powerstroke from 2011 through 2019 uses the Ford 6R140, a six-speed rated for 1,400 lb-ft of input with converter multiplication. It locks the converter at low speed, and on 2011-2014 trucks the converter clutch is a single friction plate. Ford did not add the high-capacity converter until the 2015 refresh.

What fails and why

The factory converter slips and overheats when power is added, and tuning that delays lockup cooks it. The signs are slipping lockup, converter shudder and high transmission temperatures when towing. Heat has other sources on these trucks too. The pump stator sleeve can partially turn and block converter charge oil, and on 2011-2014 trucks the transmission cooler sits on the low-temp secondary coolant loop, so low secondary coolant starves it. Rule those out before you blame the converter alone.

What we carry

BD Diesel's Proforce 4D 6R140 torque converter and the Five Star Performance torque converter from ATS Diesel Performance are each built for 2011-2019 6.7L trucks. They replace the factory single-plate converter on trucks that tow hard or make more power than stock. Pair a converter swap with a fresh fluid and FT-187 filter service.

Fitment notes

Converter parts are 6R140-specific and fit 2011-2019 trucks. The 10R140 ten-speed that arrived for 2020 shares nothing with the 6R140, so a converter from a newer truck will not work. Confirm the fluid spec on the dipstick or fill location, or in your owner's manual, before you refill, and verify fitment by VIN with the fitment checker.

Frequently asked questions

Does a stock 2011-2014 6.7L need an upgraded converter?

Not always. The factory converter's weakness shows up when power is added or the truck tows heavy and lockup starts to slip. If yours is stock and the transmission holds its normal 195-230 F operating range, start with a fluid and FT-187 filter service.

Will these converters fit a 2020 or newer Super Duty?

No. Ford moved to the 10R140 ten-speed for 2020, and it shares no converter parts with the 6R140. The converters here are for 2011-2019 6.7L trucks.

My transmission runs hot when I tow. Is it the converter?

It can be, since a slipping converter makes heat. But check the secondary coolant level first, because the 2011-2014 transmission cooler runs on that loop, and a turned pump stator sleeve can also block converter charge oil.
