2011-2014 Ford 6.7L Powerstroke Transmission Fluid

Transmission fluid for the 6R140 TorqShift in 2011-2014 Ford F-250, F-350 and F-450 trucks with the 6.7L Powerstroke, from Motorcraft, Hot Shot's Secret and Lucas Oil. The one rule here: read the spec on the bottle. Not every fluid in this collection is meant for a 6R140, so confirm the spec on your dipstick or fill area, or in the owner's manual.

Transmission fluid for the 2011-2014 Ford 6.7L Powerstroke

The 6R140 holds 17.4 to 18.5 quarts of fluid. The published change interval is 150,000 miles under normal use and 50,000 miles under severe use, and the fluid should run between 195 and 230 degrees F. Change the FT-187 filter at the same time. Fluid also carries heat out of the transmission, and on 2011-2014 trucks that heat goes to a cooler on the low-temp secondary loop. When that loop runs low on coolant, the trans cooler is starved and temperatures climb.

Why fluid service comes first

When a 6R140 starts slamming shifts or flaring on the 2-3, the known causes are valve-body debris, a worn TCC boost valve bore and dead solenoids. Fresh fluid and a new filter, with a solenoid and harness refresh, come before anyone condemns the valve body. Skipped service is one of the common reasons a 6R140 fails, so staying on the interval is the simplest protection you have.

What we carry

  • Motorcraft: XT10QLVC Mercon LV Automatic Transmission Fluid, listed for 2011-2019 6.7L Powerstroke trucks.

Fitment notes

With fluid, the spec is the fitment. Confirm the spec for your truck on the dipstick or fill area, or in your owner's manual, and match it to the label on the bottle. 4x4 trucks also have a transfer case that holds about 1.9 to 2.0 quarts on the same 150,000/50,000-mile schedule; confirm its fluid spec the same way. If you run a deep aftermarket pan, plan on extra fluid, since deep pans add capacity over the factory pan.

Frequently asked questions

How much fluid does a 2011-2014 6.7L transmission hold?

About 17.4 to 18.5 quarts total. Buy enough for the job you are doing, and plan for more if you run a deeper aftermarket pan.

Can I use any ATF in a 6R140?

No. Use a fluid that meets the spec on your dipstick or fill area or in the owner's manual. Several fluids here, including the Type F, the ATF+4/Dexron III/Mercon V and the G56 SAE 50, are labeled for other transmissions. The Motorcraft XT10QLVC is listed for 2011-2019 6.7L trucks.

How often should I change the fluid?

The published interval is 150,000 miles normal and 50,000 miles severe, with a new FT-187 filter. If trans temps run high when you tow, check the secondary coolant loop as well.
