Call or Text (352) 722-5295The injection pump on the 2011-2014 Ford 6.7L Powerstroke
Every 2011-2014 6.7L Powerstroke left the factory with the first version of the Bosch CP4.2. It pressurizes two common rails to roughly 30,000 psi, and it is lubricated by the fuel passing through it. For 2015 Ford upgraded the CP4.2 with more stroke and flow but kept the same architecture. The pump's volume control valve, called the MPROP or FCA inlet metering valve, sits in the path that pump debris travels, along with the rails and the return.
What fails and why
Aerated fuel or fuel with low lubricity lets the CP4.2 wear, and the metal it sheds goes through the rails, the injectors, the MPROP and the return. Diesel Hub notes that domestic diesel can fall below the lubricity this pump needs, and failure can come at any mileage. Watch for a long crank or hard hot start, a rough idle that smooths with rpm, sudden power loss, P0087 low rail pressure, or metal in the fuel filter. P0087 alone is not proof, though: restricted filters, weak low-pressure supply, air leaks, electrical faults or excessive injector return can set it, so test low-side pressure first. Once a pump has shed metal, the repair covers both rails, all eight injectors, every high-pressure line and a tank and line cleaning, not just the pump.
Stock replacement vs. upgrade
A stock replacement CP4.2 is the direct route back to factory. Use the right install kit and replace any high-pressure line you open, since those lines are one-time-use. If the old pump shed metal, a contamination kit with the pump is the more complete order. The protection upgrade is a bypass, or disaster prevention, kit. The S&S Diesel Motorsport version, sold in our filtration section, carries CARB EO D-756-1, needs no tuning, and routes the pump's bottom-end flow back to the tank and filters so a failing pump cannot feed debris to the rails and injectors. It contains debris; it does not stop pump wear. The SPE Motorsport and No Limit Fabrication kits are built for the same job; check their product pages for EO status. Alternate-pump conversions, such as the S&S DCR pump conversion or SPE Dual Fueler kits, also exist for this engine. Verify CARB EO status on those before you order for a truck registered in an emissions-controlled state.
What we carry
Pumps: the XDP XD524 remanufactured CP4, Dynomite Diesel Products new and remanufactured stock CP4s, and the Exergy Performance CP4.2 pump. Install and cleanup: Alliant Power AP0157 and AP0190 fuel injection pump install kits and the AP57000 contamination kit, plus the XDP XD514 contamination kit. Metering valves and hardware: Exergy Fuel System Saver improved stock inlet metering valves, the Exergy CP4.2 -6AN supply and return fitting kit, and the SPE Motorsport CP4 pump -6AN fittings and Billet Exo Filter 2.0 lid. Protection: the SPE Disaster Prevention 2.0 kit and the No Limit Fabrication CP4 Bypass Disaster Kit. Conversions: the S&S Diesel Motorsport DCR pump conversion and SPE Dual Fueler kits with or without a CP3. Fleece Performance Engineering also offers a lift pump pigtail for 2011-2016 trucks.
Fitment notes
Match the pump to the year. The 2011-2014 trucks use the first-version CP4.2 and the 2015 refresh changed it, so check that a pump listing covers your model year. The XDP and Dynomite pumps here are listed for 2011-2014, and the Exergy pump for 2011-2019. The Alliant Power AP0157 install kit is listed for 2011-2014 and the AP0190 for 2011-2024. The SPE Disaster Prevention 2.0 kit is listed for 2011-2014. If you plan a lift pump too, Fleece verifies its PowerFlo kit to work with S&S bypass and DCR kits. Confirm your truck by VIN before ordering.
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between a bypass kit and a pump conversion?
A bypass kit keeps the CP4.2 and reroutes its bottom-end flow to the tank and filters, so debris from a failing pump gets caught before it reaches the rails and injectors. A conversion replaces the pump or adds a second one. The S&S bypass kit carries CARB EO D-756-1; check EO status on any conversion before you order in an emissions-controlled state.
Does a P0087 code mean I need a new injection pump?
Not on its own. Restricted filters, weak low-pressure supply, air leaks, electrical faults or excessive injector return can all set P0087. Test low-side pressure and inspect the filter. Metal in the filter is the sign that points to the pump.
If my CP4.2 failed, can I just bolt in a new pump?
Not if it shed metal. A CP4 event contaminates both rails, all eight injectors and every high-pressure line, and the tank and low-pressure lines need cleaning. That is why contamination kits are sold with or without the pump.
Will a lift pump work with a CP4 bypass or DCR kit?
Fleece verifies its PowerFlo in-tank lift pump kit to work with S&S CP4 bypass and DCR kits. For frame-rail lift pumps, check whether the kit keeps or bypasses the factory DFCM and read its compatibility notes.
