Call or Text (352) 722-5295Brakes on the 2011-2014 Ford 6.7L Powerstroke
The 2011-2014 Super Duty stops on four-wheel vented disc brakes with ABS. On F-250 and F-350 pickups the rotors measure 13.66 in up front and 13.39 in at the rear, and the F-450 pickup carries its own larger set at 14.53 in front and 15.35 in rear. Ford also built towing help into the system. Trailer sway control is standard and uses a yaw sensor to brake individual front wheels or cut power. Hill start assist is standard. Tow/Haul mode brings in the exhaust brake, which works automatically on these model years; the manual exhaust brake switch did not arrive until 2015. Dually trucks also get an integrated trailer brake controller as standard.
What fails and why
Two problems show up on these trucks again and again, and both leave a caliper dragging. The first is the slide pins. They corrode, the grease dries out, and the caliper can no longer float, so the pad rides on the rotor and overheats it. You will notice a pull to one side, a burning smell from one wheel, or the pads on one corner wearing much faster than the rest. This is an age and corrosion problem more than a mileage one, which is why every brake service should include pulling, cleaning and re-lubing the pins. The second is the rubber brake hose. On older trucks a hose can collapse internally and act like a one-way valve, holding the caliper applied even when the slide pins are free. If you have cleaned and greased the pins and a caliper still hangs up, suspect the hose on that corner. Trucks that tow also show heat-warped rotors.
Stock replacement vs. upgrade
For a working truck, the practical brake upgrade is not a big-brake swap. It is OEM-size rotors and pads of good quality, installed with new slide pins, boots and hoses, which fixes the causes above instead of hiding them. Replacing aged rubber hoses when a caliper sticks restores proper release and is good insurance on a truck that pulls a trailer. Owners sometimes ask about bolting on the larger 14.29 in brakes from 2015-2016. That is not a bolt-on swap without matching hub and knuckle hardware, so verify every piece before you go that way. When you bleed or flush the system, use the fluid type your owner's manual calls for.
What we carry
Lucas Oil covers the service side of a brake job: DOT 3 and DOT 4 synthetic brake fluid, a non-chlorinated brake parts cleaner for scrubbing caliper brackets and slide-pin bores, and a contact cleaner for electrical connectors. BDS Suspension supplies front and rear brake line sets built for 2011-2015 4WD trucks running a 4 to 8 inch lift. Wehrli Custom Fabrication adds a billet aluminum brake master cylinder cap; its listing names a 2017-2026 fitment range, so check it against your truck in the fitment checker before you order. For engine, fuel and maintenance parts on this truck, start at the Powerstroke hub.
Fitment notes
Brake sizes split by year. The 2011-2014 F-250 and F-350 use 13.66 in front and 13.39 in rear rotors, 2015-2016 trucks moved to 14.29 in front and rear, and the F-450 pickup has its own larger set, so a 2015 brake part is not automatically a 2014 brake part. Front brake parts also split 4WD vs 2WD. A 4x2 truck rides on Twin-I-Beam front suspension, while a 4x4 uses a solid Dana Super 60 axle; check for front axle shafts and hublocks before you order. The BDS lines are 4WD-only and meant for lifted trucks, not stock height. When in doubt, verify by VIN with the fitment checker or call the shop.
Frequently asked questions
Why does my 6.7L Super Duty pull to one side when I brake?
On these trucks the usual cause is a front caliper that is not releasing. Corroded, dry slide pins are the first thing to check, and an internally collapsed rubber hose is the second. A burning smell from one wheel and fast pad wear on one side point the same way.
Do I need new brake hoses when I do pads and rotors?
Not automatically. But if a caliper was sticking and the slide pins move freely, replace the hose on that corner, because a collapsed hose can hold the caliper applied like a one-way valve. On an older truck that tows, new hoses during a brake job are good insurance.
Can I put 2015-2016 brakes on my 2013 F-250?
Not as a bolt-on. The 2015-2016 trucks use 14.29 in rotors front and rear, and fitting them to a 2011-2014 truck takes matching hub and knuckle hardware. For most owners, OEM-size rotors and pads with new pins, boots and hoses are the better fix.
Should I use DOT 3 or DOT 4 brake fluid?
Use the type your owner's manual specifies. We carry both Lucas Oil DOT 3 and DOT 4 synthetic fluid so you can match it. If you are not sure which your truck takes, call the shop with your VIN and we will help you check.
How does the exhaust brake work on a 2011-2014 6.7L?
It is built into Tow/Haul mode and comes on automatically; Ford did not add a manual switch until 2015. Ford pairs it with standard trailer sway control and hill start assist, and dually trucks get an integrated trailer brake controller as standard.
