Call or Text (352) 722-5295Compound turbos on the 2008-2010 Ford 6.4L Powerstroke
Navistar built the 6.4L Powerstroke for Ford with compound turbocharging from day one, and no light truck had a factory compound setup before it. The BorgWarner V2S assembly is series-sequential: air passes through a 65 mm fixed-geometry low-pressure turbo first, then a 52 mm variable-geometry high-pressure turbo. Ford's stated goal was boost control at both low and high speeds for throttle response. An electric actuator positions the high-pressure vanes, closing them on cold starts to raise back pressure and bring the engine up to temperature faster. From the showroom, the pair makes about 40 psi of boost.
What fails and why
When a compound set gets condemned, check the usual suspects first. The original VGT actuator is cited as the most common cause of 6.4L turbo failure, with symptoms like full boost on startup, surging and P0046-type codes. Soot can stick the high-pressure vanes, especially on short-trip trucks that regenerate often. Charge-air leaks at boots, clamps and intercooler connections mimic a bad turbo. Genuine turbo damage tends to trace back to oil condition, from fuel dilution during regeneration or a carboned oil feed, or to long stretches of 1,200-1,400 F exhaust heat from a plugged DPF stuck in regeneration.
Stock replacement vs. upgrade
Because the factory system is already compound, the aftermarket path for the 6.4L is larger compressor wheels in the factory pair, about 59-60 mm on the high-pressure turbo and 71-72 mm on the low-pressure turbo, not an added stage. The mainstream fix is a new or remanufactured stock-style V2S set, and past the wheel-upgraded sets, drive pressure and pistons become the limit. Whichever way you go, inspect and clean the oil feed lines first and give the new assembly a 60-second idle break-in, because turbo warranties exclude oil starvation and contamination.
What we carry
BD Diesel supplies the 179514-B remanufactured OEM exchange turbocharger assembly, listed for 2008-2010 Powerstroke trucks. Ford's factory assembly falls in the 8C3Z-6K682-C part number family, a useful reference when you compare replacements. Because it's an exchange part, read the listing for what's included and how the exchange works before you pull your old assembly. Install kits, gaskets and clamps are on the Turbo Accessories page, and every turbo we sell is on our turbos page.
Fitment notes
The V2S assembly fits only 2008-2010 6.4L engines. The 6.0L's single VGT and the 6.7L's turbos are different parts and do not swap over. Remanufactured sets are commonly sold without the actuator, so check the BD listing and budget for an actuator if yours is original or suspect. Verify by VIN before ordering, and confirm the truck has the 6.4L, since 2008-2010 F-250 and F-350 Super Dutys were also sold with a gas V10.
Frequently asked questions
Can I add a compound kit to my 6.4L?
Not the way you would on a single-turbo diesel. The 6.4L already runs two turbos in series from the factory. Aftermarket compound offerings for this engine are replacement pairs or pairs with larger compressor wheels, not an added stage.
Does the BD 179514-B include the VGT actuator?
Check the listing before you order. Remanufactured V2S sets are commonly sold with the actuator not included. Since the original actuator is the most common cause of 6.4L turbo complaints, decide up front whether you're replacing it in the same job.
What should I do before installing a remanufactured turbo assembly?
Confirm the turbos are actually the problem by smoke-testing the charge system and comparing commanded and actual boost. Then inspect and clean the oil feed lines and plan a 60-second idle break-in after install. Skipping the oil-side work puts the new assembly at risk, and warranties exclude oil starvation and contamination.
