Call or Text (352) 722-5295Valve covers on the 2008-2010 Ford 6.4L Powerstroke
The 6.4L valve train is hydraulic lifters, pushrods, rocker arms on fulcrum plates and valve bridges. Each fulcrum plate bolts through the rocker pedestal into the head with two bolts, and the rockers get their only oil through the pushrods. Unlike the 6.0L, the 6.4L head bolts do not retain the rocker carrier. The piezo injectors sit in stainless, replaceable sleeves. That is a lot of service work under one cover. For the full Ford diesel lineup, start at our Powerstroke collection.
When the covers come off
Rocker, injector and head work all mean pulling the valve covers, and the valve-cover and rocker-box gaskets are included in 6.4L head-gasket kits. Rocker work is tied to oil: fuel-diluted oil chews up rocker tips and bridge balls because the rockers depend on what comes up the pushrods. Injector work comes up because piezo injectors can stick from varnish, stick open and over-fuel a cylinder, or leak fuel into the crankcase. If the covers are off, look over the rocker tips and bridges before you button it back up, and put fresh gaskets on it when you do.
Stock replacement vs. upgrade
Valve cover gaskets are a stock-replacement part; there is no performance gasket here. The choice is which set. MAHLE lists the VS50744 upper set, the VS50745 lower set and the VS50503 set for the 2008-2010 6.4L, so match the set to how far the job goes. The Mishimoto MMOFC-MUS1 oil filler cap is listed for 1994-2010 7.3L, 6.0L and 6.4L Powerstroke trucks. If the job turns into valve train work on a truck built for power, upgraded valve springs, pushrods and rocker bridges are the next step, and worn rockers and bridges get replaced as a set.
What we carry
MAHLE valve cover gasket sets in upper (VS50744), lower (VS50745) and the VS50503 set, all listed for 2008-2010 6.4L trucks, plus the Mishimoto MMOFC-MUS1 oil filler cap. Rocker bridges, valve springs, pushrods and head sets for a deeper job are in the 6.4L valve train and engine components collections.
Fitment notes
The MAHLE gasket sets are listed for the 2008-2010 6.4L only. The 6.4L heads are unique to these years and do not interchange with the 2003-2007 6.0L or the 2011-up 6.7L, so a gasket set from either of those engines is not a substitute. Upper and lower are sold as separate sets. Verify by VIN before you order.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need new valve cover gaskets every time I pull the covers?
Plan on it. The valve-cover and rocker-box gaskets are disturbed for any rocker, injector or head work on the 6.4L, and they come in 6.4L head-gasket kits. Fresh gaskets save you from pulling the cover a second time to chase a leak.
Which MAHLE valve cover gasket set do I need?
MAHLE lists the VS50744 (upper), VS50745 (lower) and VS50503 sets for the 2008-2010 6.4L. Which one you need depends on how far the job goes. Call us with the job and your VIN and we will match the set.
Does the Mishimoto oil filler cap fit other Powerstrokes?
The MMOFC-MUS1 is listed for 1994-2010 7.3L, 6.0L and 6.4L Powerstroke trucks, so it is one of the few parts on this page that is not 6.4L-only. Check the fitment line on the product against your VIN.
Should I check the rockers while the valve covers are off?
Yes. The rockers get their only oil through the pushrods, so fuel-diluted oil shows up as worn rocker tips and bridge balls. Updated pushrods with larger oil holes and good CJ-4 oil are cited as the fix for rocker lubrication complaints.
