Call or Text (352) 722-5295Cooling system parts on the 2008-2010 Ford 6.4L Powerstroke
The 6.4L Powerstroke cooling system is more plumbing than most. Coolant leaves the front cover, where the water pump hub and impeller mount, and runs through the horizontal EGR cooler, then the vertical EGR cooler, then back. Heater hose assemblies, radiator hoses, the thermostat housing and the temperature sensors all hang off that loop, and every joint is a place for coolant to get out. The factory fill is 7.66 gallons of Motorcraft Gold mixed 50/50 with distilled water.
What fails and why
Small hose and connection leaks, along with weak degas caps, let the coolant level drop until the engine overheats under load. It shows on long grades and gets worse with a trailer behind you. Inside, degraded coolant restricts the oil cooler and the flow to the EGR coolers; owners report that around 50,000 to 75,000 miles, with high oil temps, de-rate and a check engine light. That is why the temperature sensors matter on this truck: a gap of about 14 F or more between engine oil and coolant temperature is the warning sign shops look for.
Stock replacement vs. upgrade
Factory-style hoses, housings, sensors and gaskets are the right call for a straight repair. On the upgrade side, a silicone radiator hose kit, an upper support bar that stops core-support flex, and a coolant filtration kit that catches contaminants before they collect in the oil cooler are the common moves. Whenever the radiator is replaced, the recommended practice is to pressure-test the system and replace the degas cap and hoses at the same time, so plan hoses into that job.
What we carry
Dorman supplies the upper radiator hose, heater hose assemblies (inlet, return tube, outlet pipe to reservoir, and EGR to exhaust manifold), a thermostat housing, an overflow hose clip and a clutch fan blade. Dayco has the curved upper radiator hose and the lower hoses for pipe-to-radiator and pipe-to-engine. Mishimoto brings a silicone radiator hose kit, the upper support bar, radiator protection bundles, a high-temperature thermostat and a coolant filter kit. XDP has the XD177 coolant filtration system, the Xtra Cool water pump, a black-phosphate water pump bolt kit, an ECT sensor and a degas cap. Alliant Power has a thermostat kit, an EOT/ECT sensor and the matching pigtail. Mahle covers the water pump gasket, thermostat housing gasket and upper and lower radiator hose seal O-rings. CSF has an AC condenser, No Limit Fabrication a coolant replacement line, and PPE an EGR valve gasket and O-ring set.
Fitment notes
Core cooling parts on this engine, like the radiator, EGR coolers, oil cooler and front cover, are 6.4L-only and do not swap with the 6.0L or 6.7L. Some of the small parts here are shared, though: the sensors and pigtail list 2003-2010 6.0/6.4L fitment, the degas cap lists 2003-2016, and the upper hose seal O-ring lists 2008-2016 6.4/6.7L. Go by each product title, and verify by VIN before you order.
Frequently asked questions
Which hoses should I replace with a new radiator on a 6.4L?
The recommended practice is to replace the hoses and degas cap whenever the radiator goes in, then pressure-test the system and confirm the water pump works. The Dorman, Dayco and Mishimoto hoses here are listed for 2008-2010 6.4L trucks.
What does a coolant filtration kit do on a 6.4L Powerstroke?
It puts a filter in the coolant circuit so contaminants get caught instead of collecting in the oil cooler. Degraded coolant restricting the oil cooler and the flow to the EGR coolers is a known 6.4L problem. Mishimoto and XDP kits are listed for this truck.
Do 6.0L cooling parts fit my 6.4L?
The big parts don't: the radiator, EGR coolers, oil cooler and front cover are 6.4L-only. Some sensors, pigtails and caps do cross over, and their titles say so. Check the year and engine range on each listing.
