2008-2010 Ford 6.4L Powerstroke Brake Parts

Extended brake lines, brake fluid and brake cleaners for the 2008-2010 Ford F-250 and F-350 Super Duty with the 6.4L Powerstroke. The pattern to know on these trucks is calipers that stick or fail to release, often at low mileage, which drags the pads, heats the rotors and keeps the truck coming back for repeat brake work.

Brakes on the 2008-2010 Ford 6.4L Powerstroke

Ford gave every 2010 Super Duty pickup four-wheel power disc brakes with ABS, large vented rotors and dual-piston calipers. On a 2008 F-250 with single rear wheels, the front rotors measure 13.66 x 0.58 inches and the rears 13.39 x 0.47 inches. The Sterling 10.5 rear axle used from 2005 to 2012 runs 13.38-inch discs with dual-piston calipers and an 8.1-inch drum-in-hat parking brake. Those rear rotors are bigger than the 13.03-inch units on 1999-2004 Super Dutys, so older rear parts do not cross over.

What fails and why

Calipers are the documented trouble spot. NHTSA logs five complaints on 2008 F-350s with caliper problems between 18,000 and 31,000 miles, at front and rear positions on both sides. The symptoms are dragging, pulling, a smoking or burning smell, blued rotors, rapid pad wear, and repeat failures after a dealer repair. Many owners also report going through rotors and pads quickly on trucks that tow heavy or have a dragging caliper, with pulsation showing up along the way. Some owners say caliper lockup is worse on hot days: the brakes lock after heat soak and the wheel is hot to the touch. Those last reports come from owner forums, not engineering data.

Doing the brake job right

Do not try to free up a seized caliper piston. Rebuild or replace the caliper, do them in pairs, install fresh slide pins and hardware with high-temp lube, then bleed the system. Pick OEM-grade or heavy-duty rotors and pads to match how much you tow, and check for drag after any caliper work. That is where this collection comes in: brake parts cleaner for the calipers and hardware, fresh brake fluid for the bleed, and the right lines if the truck is lifted.

What we carry

  • Lucas Oil 10825 DOT 3 synthetic brake fluid and 10827 DOT 4 synthetic brake fluid.
  • Lucas Oil 10906 non-chlorinated brake parts cleaner and 10799 contact cleaner for electrical connections.
  • BDS Suspension front brake line set for 2008-2010 6.4L 4WD trucks with a 6-8 inch lift.
  • BDS Suspension rear brake line for 2005-2010 6.0L and 6.4L 4WD trucks with a 6-8 inch lift.

Fitment notes

Brake parts on these trucks split by single-rear-wheel versus dually and by F-450 applications on 19.5-inch wheels, so verify by model and wheel size before you order hard parts. The BDS lines are 4WD-only and built for 6-8 inch lifts, not stock-height trucks. For fluid, use the DOT rating your owner's manual calls for. Verify by VIN when in doubt, and see the rest of your engine's parts on our Power Stroke page.

Frequently asked questions

Why do my brakes keep dragging after new pads?

Look at the calipers. Stuck or slow-releasing calipers are the documented complaint on 2008-2010 Super Dutys, and new pads will not fix a caliper that will not let go. Rebuild or replace them in pairs with new slide pins, hardware and high-temp lube, then bleed the system and check for drag.

Do I need longer brake lines after a lift?

BDS Suspension sells these lines for 4WD trucks with a 6-8 inch lift: a front set for the 2008-2010 6.4L and a rear line that covers 2005-2010 6.0L and 6.4L trucks. If your lift is in that range, they replace the factory-length lines. For a smaller lift, follow the lift maker's instructions.

Should I use DOT 3 or DOT 4 brake fluid?

Use the rating your owner's manual specifies. Lucas Oil makes synthetic fluid in both DOT 3 and DOT 4, so you can match the spec. Bleed with fresh fluid after any caliper job.

Will rear brake parts from my 2004 Super Duty fit?

No. Rear axles from 2005 on carry larger 13.39-inch rotors than the 13.03-inch units on 1999-2004 trucks, so the older parts are not a match.

Are the brakes the same on a dually or an F-450?

Not always. Rotor and caliper parts split by single-rear-wheel versus dually and by F-450 applications on 19.5-inch wheels. Check your model and wheel size, then verify by VIN.
