2008-2010 Ford 6.4L Powerstroke Differential Fluid

Gear oil and additive for the differentials on 2008-2010 Ford F-250, F-350 and F-450 Super Duty trucks with the 6.4L Powerstroke. The thing to know: the front and rear axles do not take the same grade, and rear capacity swings widely depending on which rear axle your truck has under it.

Differential fluid for the 2008-2010 Ford 6.4L Powerstroke

Ford's chart for the 6.4L Powerstroke Super Duty calls for SAE 80W-90 in the Dana 60 front, about 2.9 quarts. The rear takes SAE 75W-90 to 75W-140, anywhere from 3.45 to 12.25 quarts, depending on whether it is the Sterling 10.5, a Dana 80 or an S110, S130 or S135 axle. Service comes at 150,000 miles on an F-250 or F-350 in normal use and at 50,000 miles on F-450/F-550 trucks or under severe duty. Lube neglect is listed right next to normal wear as the main source of axle work on these trucks, so staying on that schedule matters.

What we carry

  • 75W-90: Hot Shot's Secret ADRENALINE synthetic racing and Blue Diamond HD synthetic, plus Lucas Oil 10047 synthetic.
  • 75W-140: Lucas Oil 10121 synthetic and Royal Purple 01301 Max-Gear synthetic.
  • 80W-90: Lucas Oil 10043 Heavy Duty, which matches Ford's front-axle grade.
  • 80W-110 and 85W-140: Hot Shot's Secret ADRENALINE and Blue Diamond, and Lucas Oil 10042 Heavy Duty 85W-140. These fall outside Ford's listed grades, so confirm your axle's spec before using them.
  • Additive: Motorcraft XL-3 additive friction modifier.

Fitment notes

Gear oil is not tied to a model year the way a cover is, but the grade and the amount are tied to the axle. Read the door-jamb axle code to confirm your ratio and whether the axle is limited slip, then check the axle tag for the rear housing.

Frequently asked questions

How much gear oil does the rear axle on a 6.4L Super Duty hold?

It depends on the axle. Ford lists 3.45 to 12.25 quarts across the Sterling 10.5 and the heavier Dana rears. Confirm your housing by the axle tag and buy for that, and plan on about 2.9 quarts for the Dana 60 front.

Which grade goes in the front differential?

Ford lists SAE 80W-90 for the Dana 60 front. In this collection, Lucas Oil 10043 Heavy Duty 80W-90 is the matching grade.

When is the differential fluid due?

Ford's schedule says 150,000 miles for an F-250 or F-350 in normal service and 50,000 miles for F-450/F-550 trucks or severe duty. A leak or a howl under load is a reason to check it sooner.
