Call or Text (352) 722-5295Cold air intakes on the 2008-2010 Ford 6.4L Powerstroke
From the factory, the 6.4L breathes through a closed airbox with a Motorcraft FA-1886 dry element and a filter minder. That air feeds the 65 mm low-pressure turbo first, which hands off to the 52 mm variable-geometry high-pressure turbo, so the intake is the front door for the whole compound setup. An S&B washable-filter cold air intake is one of the documented replacements for the stock box on this engine. A cold air intake replaces the airbox and inlet tube up to the turbo; the boots, intercooler and piping after the turbos are a separate job.
What an intake will and won't fix
An intake changes how the engine breathes before the turbos. It does not seal the charge-air system after them. On the 6.4L, boots, couplers and clamps crack or blow off from heat and boost, and the result is low boost, smoke, a sluggish throttle, a hiss under load or a P0299 code. Those leaks get misdiagnosed as turbo failure, and a new intake will not touch them either. If the truck is down on boost, smoke-test the charge system before you spend money on the front end.
Stock box vs. aftermarket intake
The stock box is fine if you are happy servicing a dry element and changing it when the filter minder says so. An aftermarket intake makes sense when you want a washable element you clean and reuse instead of throwing away, or when you are building the truck and want the inlet to match the rest of your upgrades. Whichever way you go, a CARB EO number is what shows an aftermarket intake is legal in all 50 states, so check each product listing for one.
What we carry
The S&B 75-5105 cold air intake and the No Limit Fabrication 64CAI cold air intake, each listed for the 2008-2010 6.4L Powerstroke. Replacement elements for aftermarket intakes, including the S&B KF-1051 and the No Limit NLRF, are in the filters collection for this truck. Shopping for a different truck? See all intakes.
Fitment notes
Intakes for this truck are built for the 2008-2010 6.4L only. They do not carry back to the 6.0L or forward to the 2011 Super Duty, which got the 6.7L and an all-new truck. F-450 and F-550 chassis-cab owners should confirm the listing covers their model before ordering. Verify by VIN, and check the rest of your engine's parts on our Power Stroke page.
Frequently asked questions
Will a cold air intake fix low boost on my 6.4L?
Not if the cause is a leak. Low boost, a hiss under load and P0299 are signs of a cracked or blown-off boot after the turbos, and those leaks get misdiagnosed as turbo trouble. Smoke-test the charge system first; the intake is a separate decision.
What filter does an S&B intake use?
S&B intakes run a washable element. The S&B KF-1051 replacement filter and WF-1022 filter wrap are listed for the 2008-2010 6.4L; confirm the element part number on your intake's product page before you order. S&B's Precision II kit handles the cleaning and re-oiling.
Is a cold air intake legal on my 6.4L?
It depends on the part. A CARB EO number on the listing is what shows an aftermarket intake is emissions-legal in all 50 states. Check each product page for one, and keep a copy with the truck's records if your state inspects underhood parts.
