2003-2007 Ford 6.0L Powerstroke Torque Converters

This page collects torque converters for the 2003-2007 Ford F-250 and F-350 Super Duty with the 6.0L Powerstroke and the 5R110W TorqShift automatic. Before you buy one, know this: lockup slip and shudder on a high-mileage TorqShift can trace back to a worn TCC control valve rather than the converter itself, so diagnose first and replace the converter when it is truly the problem.

Torque converters on the 2003-2007 Ford 6.0L Powerstroke

The 6.0L Powerstroke arrived in the Super Duty with the 5R110W TorqShift, a five-speed automatic rated for 1,000 lb-ft that replaced the 4R100. It has Tow/Haul, PTO provision and a hidden sixth ratio that is only used in extreme cold weather. The torque converter couples the engine to that gearbox, and its lockup clutch gives you a direct connection once you are cruising.

What causes lockup problems

On a high-mileage TorqShift, a worn TCC control valve lets the converter clutch slip and cycle. You feel it as slip or shudder at lockup, and a scan tool shows P0741 or P1783. The valve changed for 2005: the 2003-2004 part measures 0.402 in. by 3.570 in., the 2005+ part is slightly longer, and the early valve should never be reused in a later unit. When the valve is replaced, the retaining clip has to go in correctly, or the truck sets P1744. Wiring matters too. One documented 2007 F-350 had body grounds reading over 20 ohms, which made the transmission pump the current return path and destroyed it by electrolysis. Clean and verify your grounds before you replace solenoids or other hard parts.

Stock replacement vs. upgrade

If the converter itself is the problem, choose by how the truck works. A factory-style replacement keeps the drive the way Ford set it up, which suits a stock work truck or daily driver. A performance converter is the step up for owners who tow heavy or have added power; read each listing for its specs. Either way, sort out the TCC control valve and the grounds first, or a new converter can inherit the same lockup complaint.

What we carry

This collection holds torque converters from ATS Diesel Performance and BD Diesel. The BD Diesel 1030227 converter is listed for 2003-2007 Powerstroke trucks. ATS offers its Five Star Performance converter for the 2003-2010 6.0L and 6.4L Powerstroke and, separately, for the 1994-2003 7.3L. The 7.3L unit is here because early-2003 Super Dutys were still 7.3L trucks, and automatic 7.3L trucks used the 4R100 that the 5R110W replaced.

Fitment notes

Verify by VIN before you order. A 2003 Super Duty can be a 7.3L or a 6.0L, and each engine came with a different automatic. The 5R110W ran from 2003 to 2010, but the 2008+ 6.4L units carry their own calibration and service parts, so treat a 2003-2007 6.0L transmission as its own family unless the listing names your year. The Excursion got the 6.0L for 2003-2005 only. Trucks with the ZF S6-650 six-speed manual do not use a torque converter.

Frequently asked questions

My TorqShift shudders at lockup. Is the converter bad?

Not always. On high-mileage 5R110W units, a worn TCC control valve causes slip and cycling with codes P0741 or P1783. Check the valve and the grounds before you buy a converter, because a new converter will not fix a valve or wiring fault.

Can I reuse the TCC control valve from a 2004 in a 2005 transmission?

No. The valve changed for 2005, and the later one is slightly longer than the 2003-2004 part. Never reuse the early valve in a 2005+ unit; replace it with the correct-year assembly. Seat the retaining clip properly, too, since a misinstalled clip sets P1744.

Will a converter listed for the 6.4L fit my 2006 F-250?

Only if the listing includes your year. The ATS Five Star converter here lists 2003-2010 6.0L and 6.4L fitment, while the BD Diesel 1030227 lists 2003-2007. Because 2008+ 6.4L transmissions carry their own calibration and service parts, go by the product's fitment, not the transmission name.
