These trucks use power recirculating-ball steering. The box swings a pitman arm, the pitman arm pushes the center link sideways, an idler arm carries the opposite end of the link, and the outer tie rods take that motion out to the knuckles. The link carries a socket at each end, and it depends on the two arms holding it. Lose either one and the link stops being located properly.
What fails and why
Center-link movement is the root of the wander complaint on this front end. Pitman and idler arms wear prematurely and let the link travel, and when both ends have play the link can rotate as well as slide. You feel a soft spot on center and a truck that drifts; you see inside-edge wear on both front tires and visible play when someone rocks the steering wheel. Lifted trucks on big tires accelerate the whole process, and cranking the torsion bars to level the nose speeds up deterioration of every front-end joint.
Stock replacement vs. upgrade
A forged OE-style link in the factory geometry is the right part for a stock-height truck whose old link is worn or bent. If you are bracing the center-link pivots in double shear to stop the movement for good, you want the version drilled for 7/8-inch hardware instead, and some owners go straight to a complete forged steering assembly so the link, arms and hardware all match. Pick the link based on what else is going on the truck, not the other way around.
What we carry
PPE supplies the forged 1.5-inch OE-style HD center link, the drilled 7/8-inch version of the same link, a welded and drilled link, and an extreme-duty forged 7/8-inch three-groove steering assembly that includes the link. BD Diesel offers steering upgrade kits that bundle the center link with the rest of the linkage, which is the simpler route if the whole front end is tired.
Fitment notes
These links are 2001-2010 parts. The 2011 trucks got a new frame and new control arms, so nothing here crosses that split. Support braces need the link in its factory position: a lift that drops the center link onto a bracket will need modification or will not work with a brace. Check whether your plan calls for a drilled or non-drilled link before ordering, since the two are not interchangeable once a brace is involved. Verify by VIN with the fitment checker if you are unsure.
Frequently asked questions
Is the center link itself bad, or is it the arms?
Usually the arms. The pitman and idler arms wear and let the link move, and that movement is what you feel at the wheel. Rock the steering wheel with the truck on the ground and watch each pivot. If the link sockets themselves are loose or the bar is bent, replace it; otherwise the arms are the repair.
Do I need the drilled 7/8-inch center link?
Only if you are installing a support that carries the center-link pivots in double shear. The drilled link gives that hardware somewhere to land. If you are doing a straight stock-geometry repair, the plain forged OE-style link is the part you want.
Will this center link fit a 2011 Silverado 2500HD?
No. The 2001-2010 steering parts stop at 2010 because the 2011 HD trucks changed frame and control arms. Use the year selector in the navigation to get to the right collection for a 2011 or newer truck.
