A conventional bolt gets twisted as it is tightened, so it's reacting to two different forces at the same time. With a head stud the force gets applied to the vertical axis, resulting in a more even clamping force. Another benefit of studs is they can provide for easier engine assembly and proper alignment of the cylinder heads every time. These studs are a must-have for high-performance applications and are reusable, unlike the OEM Torque-To-Yield (TTY) bolts which must be replaced after each use. TECH TIPS:
Inner Row Head Bolts (Sold Separately):
The XDP Inner Row Head Bolt Kit XD3020HB allows you to complete the job without having to reuse the factory bolts, or source a new set while your engine is torn down. Inner row head bolts secure the intake side of the cylinder head to the engine block and help to properly complete the factory bolt torque sequence.

XDP Thread Cleaning Chasers (Sold Separately):
Both the XD40126TC (for head studs), and XD40128TC (for inner row bolts) are a great add-on that will be critical during installation. Thread Cleaning Chasers are an excellent tool to have on-hand to ensure you have properly cleaned the threads in your engine block before the installation of any fasteners. Clean threads provide accurate torque readings and will help give you peace of mind during your engine build or head gasket repair.

Fastener Assembly Lubricant (Sold Separately):
The use of assembly lubricant is highly recommended during engine assembly. Apply lubricant to head studs, head bolts, main studs, main bolts, connecting rod bolts, and any other fasteners used during engine assembly. Using a proper assembly lubricant during fastener installation reduces friction and torque pre-load scatter in the torqueing sequence, while also helping to prevent thread galling and seizing.
